Hibernation mode on a desktop

No it doesn't carry on "where you last stopped" (unless you told it to hibernate manualy, or if windows decided to go into hibernate mode becasue of the power schema) as you put it, when windows "hibernates" it makes an exact image copy of the memory when it wants to go into hibernate mode, it does not make a constant updated image, so if your computer suddernly turns off due to power outage or some thing of the like, it will not remeber "where you last stopped" becasue the image is not there, and when you turn the computer back on windows won't even look for the image any way, so even if it was there, it would not atempt to use it.

With an external powersupply (batteryoperated like APC) hibernation on a
desktop is usefull, otherwise useless.

I use it on my desktops. It is a convenient way to save power (money,
global warming, heat in the summer, etc) automatically. Further if you have
a power loss while hibernating you will not lose data.
