My search function has stopped working (Start->Search->For Files or
Folders). After initiating a file search I get absolutely 'no' files or
folders, even though I know that I have I'm pretty sure I have it
configured correctly, I've used it for 3+ years. The rest of my system
works flawlessly. Virus and spyware scans are negative. There are no new
recent changes to my system and I've not added or deleted any programs. Any
help appreciated.

I am, and if so this doesn't help. Mine has been broken since around
the time I loaded SP2 (about a year ago), but I can't say if that was
causal since I so rarely search for files. It may have been broken
before that and I simply didn't notice it.

I've tried every tip, trick, and registry hack I could find and nothing
has worked. I get the search box and type in my criteria, but when I
click "Search Now" nothing happens at all. Even using * as the criteria
does nothing. It's as if that button is purely decorative with no
actual code behind it. I've pretty well given up, but if you have any
other suggestions (short of an OS rebuild), I'm certainly game.

Give this a shot then.

%windir% = C:\WINDOWS if Windows is installed on the C: drive. I have no
idea about your machine. Paste %windir% into Start | Run click OK and see
what opens.

Try this.
1. Go to C:\Windows\srchasst\ or %windir%\srchasst\ and delete everything
that you can.
2. Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

regsvr32 /u %windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

You will see a message like this if successful...
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

3. Go to C:\Windows\Inf\ or %windir%\Inf\ right click srchasst.inf and
click install.

No go. I've tried this before when I ran across it elsewhere online,
but for good measure I tried it again. Still no luck, though.

Wesley - tried your suggestion but when I rt click on srchasst I get a msg that says I need a msgr3en.dll from the CD (my CD is SP2).

I too can not do a file & folders search via Start/Search - nothing happens not even a error msg. I can go to say MY DOCUMENTS and click on the magnifying glass and search my PC that way- so all not lost.

Odd, but I now can't go to Start/Help & Support - I get a msg that says sart the Help & support Service- but when I go to SERVICES.MSC - I see no such Help & Support listed.

You need to insert the Windows XP CD with SP2 integration, not the SP2
update CD.
