The application was unable to initialize the store directory. Your computer

my disc is not full and i have a lot of memory left, so why cant i open my
mail?
I am getting to hate this windows mail, B.s., i never had so many problems
with this,. outlook express worked with no problems

Are you running McAfee or Norton antivirus? Those will need to be
uninstalled because they are incompatible with Windows Mail.

Webmail is not a program. You go to the webmail site with your

I've given up with Windows Mail on my existing account and reverted to
Outlook. Can anyone provide advice on how I can get my IE Favourites across
to a new user account where I can get WM working?

In addition, if I stick with Outlook, how can get it to send and receive on
opening?

In IE: Click File (if you don't see File, press Alt), Import & Export.

Outlook questions should be referred to the Outlook newsgroup:

I have the same message, problem as bgjon, but after the first sentence, it
reads "initialize junk filtering." When I cancel out that dialogue box,
there's on more box, which reads "Windows Mail could not be started because
MDOE.DLL could not be initiated."

Also, I have McAfee Virus. Why the heck did they put it in my Gateway Laptop
that I bought six months ago with Vista if Windows Mail it isn't compatible
with McAfee!?!? They put in a program that they knew didn't work with the
mail program that comes with the system?!?!

Gateway and other computer sellers include a trial copy of
McAfee or Norton AV because the AV vendor pays (bribes)
them to do so. The incompatibility problem is not widely known
outside of this cadre of Windows Mail experts.

Gary, I just uninstalled McAfee, restarted, and tried to open Windows Mail
again, with the exact same result. What's my next step? Thanks.

Something in your Windows Mail is corrupted. Hopefully it is
just the mail account, so delete that mail account, restart Windows
Mail, then recreate that account. If no improvement, the
corruption is more widespread.

When all else fails, there are two drastic solutions:

You can try a repair install of Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
This will replace system files, but is not supposed to affect data.

Another option is to abandon Windows Mail and switch to Windows
Live Mail. It will automatically import your WM accounts, settings,
folders and emails.

Why did Microsoft abandon Microsoft Outlook Express. It was a perfectly
functional email program and it worked pretty good. I would prefer to work
with Outlook Express again. Anyway of getting that loaded in Vista? The
problems with program compatibility in Vista are just terrible. NOT
impressed.

No, Outlook Express won't install in Vista.

I haven't seen an explanation as to why OE was abandoned.
Perhaps its program code just wasn't secure enough for Vista.
