Hi -
I'm curious as to what the professionals consider to be
the best anti-spyware programs available. Not just the
free stuff, what's the BEST program.

I realize that none of them are perfect and that using
more than one is necessary.

Just looking for some guidance.

Thx

I hate to say this...but I switched to firefox and I have had no problems
since. No pop ups, no spyware, nothing. And you can customize the browser!
I no longer have to run any spyware or anythng.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mozilla.org" target="_blank">www.mozilla.org</a>

It also has it's own email app - thunderbird.

Thanks Kenny. I've used Microsoft's anti-spyware offering
and found it to be pretty good. I appreciate your input.

Thank you so much for that valuable information.

Unfortunately, there are many very smart people who do not
have the experience in the use of computers to make smart
decisions about which anti-spyware products to use.

But your answer cut right to the heart of the matter.
Thank you !

that brings up a very good point, that the free stuff is not only
inadequate, but also lulls people into a false sense of security. the
fact is that some of the free stuff has no proactive components (that
stay active in memory providing always-on protection), but are only
designed to mop up the infection After the damage is Already done.

since you already know that some anti-spyware programs do the same
thing, and some anti-spyware programs do different things, here is a
list of the best defenses against spyware, grouped wherever they do the
same thing.

AdAware Plus/Pro or SpySweeper (not the free versions which have no
memory-resident always-on component);
Spybot Search & Destroy;
the replacement Hosts file found in
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm" target="_blank">http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm</a> or IE-Spyad.

Microsoft's Anti-spyware program might be added here someday, but since
it is still under modification (in beta), i chose not to mention it yet.

i also have a personal uneasiness about a company producing an
anti-spyware product, that already collects and reports information
about me without my knowledge. furthermore, do i really want a behemoth
bent on destroying their competition to unilaterally determine what is
permitted and what is forbidden ? (i.e., what will they decide is
really spyware ? Firefox ? ) for this reason it is important that you
search News in Google, and read the following articles:

The Spy Who Monopolized Me
WebProNews, KY - Feb 22, 2005

Microsoft AntiSpyware thinks Firefox is Spyware
Slashdot - Feb 27, 2005

Thanks JW. I use a good HOSTS file and have used SpyBot
and Spy Sweeper and I'm impressed with both of them. When
I used Spy Sweeper I found that nothing ever showed up in
SpyBot, Adaware or Microsoft's product so I'm leaning
towards the Webroot product.

I appreciate your input.

That's why I said, "The best anti-spyware protection is *smart*
*computer* *user*." There are many people that I consider to be
relatively dumb human beings, that are smart computer users, and vise
versa.

I wholeheartedly second that. For firefox, <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="htt://www.getfirefox.com," target="_blank">htt://www.getfirefox.com,</a> for
Thunderbird: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.getthunderbird.com" target="_blank">http://www.getthunderbird.com</a>

Both of these can import all your IE and Outlook settings and stuff
besides being much much more secure. But the best of all is:
1) tabbed browsing
2) text zooming (inrease/decrease size) using CTRL+wheel of the mouse
3) the Adblock plugin (you decide which ads should be shown and which
ones not)
4) flashblock plugin (you decided which flash animations should be shown
and not)
5) image blocking
6) popup blocking.

Seriously, some spyware experts figure that by years end there will be
spyware written for Firefox.

So, I wouldn't be depending on any technology to keep you away from
spyware for too long. Your best bet is learning how to stay away from
spyware all on your own.
