Post subject: HELP: BSOD on boot-up, reboots computer several times.

When I first turn on my Pentium 4 computer, the "eMachines" logo screen comes on, then the Windows XP logo pops up and one of three things happens:

1) I get a BSOD flash really quickly and then the system reboots again.

2) I get nothing but the flashing blue bar and it stays this way for hours, essentially locking up the boot sequence. I.E. nothing else happens.

3) I get a successful boot and my desktop loads.

The most frequent occurance is either one or two. When I finally get into the OS, I have ran RFA, AV's in bootscan mode, Windows XP's error correction (with both boxes ticked), defrag w/full optimization, chkdsk w/full optimization, scandisk w/ autocorrection, Ad-Aware in full heuristic mode, Avast in full heuristic mode and even ZA Security Suite. All were of little help or none at all in eliminating this BSOD on boot up. Sometimes Windows XP won't even shutdown. System Restore was also useless after 30 days, since system restore only keeps about 30 days backed up. I did however find a program that was of moderate help. It was called "NTREGOPT" by someone named Lars someone-or-another. I can't recall his lastname. However, it did not cure this BSOD problem, it did however, speed up the registry and eliminated some junk registry keys not caught by RFA and then compressed the registry. This now makes the system run much faster, but the BSOD is still there. It just doesn't seem to take nearly as long to load the OS or as many times to reboot the system before you get a successful load.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this, short of formatting the HD (clean install) or anything that could mean the loss of data? I can't lose the data of my computer.

No, I don't have any games that are on that list installed on either HD. I do have Ragnarok Online installed on D: drive as well as the Ragnarok Online software for my private server there also. I do have eAthena software that runs my private server on my C: drive. Why is those games so important to be boycotted? The BSOD didn't start showing until towards the end of the SP-1 update and got worse with the SP-2 update (especially with the later MS updates that came out after the MS Genuine Authenication update for SP-2). I am using XP Home (w/SP-2) with 384MB RAM and 2 40GB HDs.

Also, when I boot, I also hold down the <SHIFT> key. I don't know if that helps or not.

Please check your Event Viewer for errors. Here's a link on how to do it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic40108.html

Also, search your hard drive for files ending in .dmp. If you find any, save them to your Desktop (so they aren't erased on reboot).

Then go to this link and follow the procedures for ananyzing the dump log: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35246

Then post the results here and we'll go over them.

Also, you can get the system to halt on the BSOD if you go into Start...Control Panel...System...Advanced Tab...Startup and Recovery Settings Button.

Then, uncheck the box that says "Automatically restart". The next time that it BSOD's, it'll stop there. Copy down all the funny looking numbers after the word STOP and make a note of any filenames that are mentioned (or, tell us that no filename was mentioned).

NTREGOPT is an excellent freeware program by Lars Hederer. I use his ERUNT tool to back up my registry every day. But, there's only so much that a registry program can do (it can't repair corrupted files).

Other options are to run SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialot (note the space between the E and the /). It may ask you to insert your installation CD. If it does, please visit Windows Update immediately afterwards to ensure that your updates are all still updated.

While waiting for a reply, you might try uninstalling your video drivers - and then reinstalling the latest, WHQL certified version.

Finally, you might try a repair install (which will preserve your programs and data) - but it's a bit early for that, so I won't include a link for that.

I did this and found no errors under Applications, Security or System.

Did a search on C: and D: drive and the only DMP file located was from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\user.dmp and was dated Sunday 09 April, 2006 (5 days old and a month as of today). It shown no reasons for the BSOD that has been occurring everytime I boot up.

Downloaded/installed the Windows Debugging Tool.

This was done and the computer still restarts as it did before, so I am still unable to halt the boot in order to view the BSOD screen.

I use NTREGOPT every time or every morning that I boot-up. It seems to help by optimizing the registry. I also noticed that once the computer is warmed up and not being booted from a cold start, I can reboot without hardly or very little problems. Rebooting after NTREGOPT isn't a problem.

I haven't tried using SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialog box yet, this is next.

Uninstalling video drivers? Not done yet, either. Can I do this via the Device Manager? Or is there a better way?

Repair install? My dad was talking about this the other day. Something about using the Windows XP install disk and have it go into repair mode instead of complete install. I dunno about this. I have a Recovery Disk that came with the eMachine w2040 that is a boot disk made with Norton Ghost (i.e. the only file on there is a *.GHO file) and it is a 2 disk system. I would need help with this if this becomes an option in order to preserve my data on both drives.

That's correct. Uninstall the video drivers via the Device Manager. Just double click on the video card entry and go to the Driver tab. Click on the Uninstall Driver button. Restart and reinstall the drivers.

Yep. The repair install will install back all the core Windows files without touching your data.

The recovery discs you have there are Ghost images. Using them will destroy all your data on the hard drive. So backing up your data now is important (either way...). Using it should be very easy. You just need to bootup from the first recovery disc and follow the simple instructions on the screen. Usually just press a key to continue...confirm, yes...and then the recovery begins. It will ask for the second CD when the first one is completed. This should take less than 10-15 minutes total.

I tried to boot up and went into safe mode, logging into the Administrator account and then rebooting. I did this in attempt to try to see if it would make a difference in starting up better or not. It was worth a try. I scanned for *.dmp on C: drive and the previous mentioned user.dmp file dated 06 April, 2006, but this time I was unable to open it inside Windows Debugging Tool and was unable to view it. Running eventvwr again several errors this time, probably because I tried to start in Safe Mode, my guess. However, the errors (in order) were the following:

1) DCOM got error "This service can't be started in Safe Mode" attempting to start the service netman with arguments "" in order to run the server. {BA126AE5-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

2) DCOM got error "This service can't be started in Safe Mode" attempting to start the service netman with arguments "" in order to run the server. {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}

3) The DHCP Client service depends on the NetBios over Tcpip service which failed to start because of the following error: A device attached to the system isn't functioning.

4) The True Vector Internet Monitor service depends on the vsdatant service which failed to start because of the following error: A device attached to the system isn't functioning.

5) DCOM got error "This service can't be started in Safe Mode" attempting to start the service netman with arguments "" in order to run the server. {BA126AE5-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

6) DCOM got error "This service can't be started in Safe Mode" attempting to start the service netman with arguments "" in order to run the server. {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}

I don't know if any of this has any bearing or if it was a result of me trying to boot into Safe Mode or what. I suspect that it might be a result of trying to boot into Safe Mode.

It would appear that uninstalling my video drivers is my next option and plan to start that now, unless other option is shared. Running my Recovery Disks is last option. I don't wish to do this unless I have no other choices. I don't have the resources to backup my data for a few weeks. Money is tight right now. If anyone has any useful suggestions, I'd appreciate them. I'm off on Wednesday and Thursday. I will have to decide by then what I will do. This isn't the first time that this has occurred. I also want to try a step-by-step boot and see if I can find what is loading right and what isn't. After that I may need to do a format and clean install, not I desire to do this.
