Undo what you did just before the BSOD.

Then never re-do that step.

Even if some forum tells you it will make your Pentium into a HexCore
computer.....

Not when you scan over the questions being posted here.

50% are as a result of updating/upgrading some driver or software that
was working fine before the "needed?" upgrade.

Sounds like perfectly great advice.

What I said is not incorrect. You answered no question directly and no one
asked you specifically what they should do. Therefore...

"Random unsolicited advice..."

Fits perfectly. If people searched before they asked in most cases - they
wouldn't ask... Therefore making your random unsolicited advice also likely
unread by those who might benefit from it. Wink

What 'poll' did you do to come up with your 50%? I could see that being
true *if* you had posted in the WindowsUpdate newsgroup... But you posted in
Help_and_Support (which - by the way - was originally meant to assist with
issues pertaining to the built-in Windows XP Help and Support feature... Not
for GENERAL Help and Support... *grin*)

In any case... Hey - it's your time - do with it what you wish.

As far as never redoing the step that messed you up - many people would call
that giving up and hoping for the best outcome. It might work out that
way - it might not. Your case may be one of the lucky (for now) few. Good
luck to you and your acquiescent mannerism towards failure exposing a
problem that likely should be heeded. Wink

What PROBLEM are you talking about? The non-problems I had waiting 6
months to upgrade to SP2? Those non-problems?

If people would read this thread starting with my original post they
would keep themselves from upgrading/updating to unnecessary things.

Most people see there first computer problems as a result of some
upgrade/update. I've seen in other NG's where people couldn't reboot
after flashing there bios and they weren't having problems before the
flash, they just seen so many people talking about that it just MUST
be something you do. Same goes for software updates. You see people
talking about SP3 and assume your computer will catch on fire and
vaporize if you don't immediately go to SP3. It's simply not true and
in fact causes untold grief.

Why would people want to encourage people to update/upgrade when
everything on there computer is working perfectly fine right now?

Why is this concept I have promoted so controversial ?

I have not told people to do something to harm there computer in fact
I've done the exact opposite which is to keep them from having
unnecessary problems.

As for unsolicited advice. Cigarette warning on packs are NOT for the
smokers, it is for those who are considering smoking.

But go ahead and encourage people to install things that have a good
chance of messing up there computer. You know, you won't be held
responsible and can just shrug your shoulders when they ask you have
to UNDO what they did with the upgrade that was suggested.

OK, now I am done....have a nice day....

Touchy over nothing but presented facts... Atacking me because of some
other thread you are involved in?

Did I ever encourage anything in this conversation? No. I pointed out the
fact that your original posting was:

Random unsolicited advice...

It was/is. No one asked you anything. You merely posted your opinion on
something in a random newsgroup of your choosing - presenting it as the
defacto standard in problem-solving techniques (something many people would
call "common sense".) So - As I original said, repeated twice now...

You have given:

Random unsolicited advice...

As for the rest of your tirade - I suppose that is in response to my last
paragraph to you... and the fact you feel backed in a corner in another
conversation?

So be it - as I said before - if you are happy living in denial of a problem
your computer has (uncovered by the installation of a patch or update or
upgrade - one that likely works on thousands upon thousands (millions upon
millions perhaps) of other people's computers and only has issues on a
select few) and not doing anything - live in your supposed "if it ain't
broke, don't fix it" world - knowing that it is *actually* broke - just
working because you refuse to patch the other problems you believe are not
causing you any issues. Wink

Having said that - before you attack me again - you should read my response
to your other thread or many of my responses archived indefinitely
throughout the MS newsgroups about updating/etc. All you are doing is
pushing your opinions and advice based off those experienced onto people who
didn't even ask for that at this point. If you *answered* some postings
about the problems (the 50% you claim are in this newsgroup) instead of
posting random unsolicited advice... Then perhaps you wouldn't sound so
much like the foil-hat type. Wink

Your basic problem is in reading these news groups and then assuming
everyone has these problems. SP3, for example, has been installed on
literally millions of computers. But if a few people have a problem you get
the attitude 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' or don't update if your
computer hasn't a problem. That is the worse advice you can present here.

Again, updating drivers and software without needing to because of
some error or compatibility issues is just plain silly.

Why do people insist on upgrading and updating and then complain when
it causes an issue or conflict?

As an example:I'm using a 2 year old video driver for my video card.
Since my video card operates properly and I never ever get errors I
will not upgrade to the latest and greatest driver.

People can deny this all they want but most of the time when someone
has an issue with a computer it's because they tinkered with the
registry or upgraded to some newer driver or patch that they DID NOT
NEED.

Anyway, do what you want to do.
