Assuming you have everthing hooked up as it was, did you install the
drivers for the connection to your computer? A "basic" cable modem
would connect to a NIC, Network Interface Card. You'll want to make
sure the drivers are installed. You can find that out by opening the
Device Manager and look for what is listed under Network Adapters. If
you don't see Network Adapters at all in the Device Manager, then you
don't have the drivers loaded for it. Then you'll have to find out what
kind of NIC you have, and install the drivers for it.

Assuming you have the drivers installed correctly, then turn off your
computer, disconnect the power to your modem for one minute. Then
reconnect your modem, and wait for it to connect. Then restart your
computer.

Assuming this doesn't work, call your cable company's tech support, and
they should walk you through resetting up your connection.

Have you contacted your ISP? They will need to register your modem to
the system.

I have a high speed cable connection and when I reformat my PC I always have
to install the LAN driver (from Intel in my case) which I keep in my back up
CDRW.
I have a cable modem but don't need the driver for that...never quite
figured out that one.

I know I've never had to use the install CD for my linksys cable modem
or the wireless router just for the wireless PCI NIC. However, if you
reformat the system and reinstall the NIC drivers don't forget to
provide the connection information. In my case even though it is DHCP U
provide Alternate configuration for IP and gateway (signal broadcasting
is turned off); SSID; channel; WEP key etc.

Never had to go into the technicalities like that. Once I've installed
Intel Pro/100 VE Network Adapter all I have to do is go to my home
page...simple.

It's the price of wireless vs. hardwire LAN. I have many neighbors
(alot of college kids) with wireless and the last thing I need is a
breach in the LAN and to provide free ISP services.
