I am currently using AT&T dial-up, so everyone out their probably can
understand my desire for high-speed. I have been trying to decide on what
high-speed to go with. Both AT&T DSL and Comcast Cable have the potential
for 3 Mbps download for the package I am looking at. The cable option has
upload potential of 256 vs. DSL 384 kbps. I live in an apartment on a
street full of apartments.

Does anyone currently use either of the above providers and can shed some
light on if one choice is better than the other? Good and bad stories for
either would be very much appreciated? The old argument of DSL vs. Cable
is also welcomed.

Thanks for taking the time to share!

Check with your neighbors. There is no real good barometer. Most end up
picking one for a time then switching after a few months. Some even switch
back again finding the grass wasn't as green on the other side as they
thought. You may find that talking on the phone at the same time as using
the internet is a plus for you as in DSL. If you are a cell phone only home,
then cable might be the better option if you use television on that medium
also. If you are a satallite user then two way satallite might be your
option.

as a general rule, Cable will be faster than DSL. Comcast is one of the
lower rated (satisfaction wise); my GF uses it and is very happy tho.

Note that a cable connection is shared by all in your "local loop" (ie,
neighbors), and that can effect speed during peak usage periods. a DSL
line is "private" to you and you alone, and it should not be affected by
your neighbor's usage patterns. But dsl speed falls off if you're too far
from the local switch. Basically you have to try it to find out how good
it will really be. Check w/ neighbor's that have it to find their
results.

And get a router! Always best to hook router to modem, and then hook your
computer(s) into the router. Makes adding new computers real easy (and
transparant to provider), and adds a security point. Only costs $50 more,
well worth the investment. For $75 you can get one w/ a "true" SPI
firewall (rather than the simpler NAT firewall, which is still good).

Mark,
Where I live I have only two options for broadband connectivity. Qwest DSL
or Charter High Speed Cable. I chose to go with Qwest DSL, even though I
could theoretically get twice the speed with cable. My choice is based on a
personal grudge I have with Charter that goes back about four years. They
raised my monthly fee for their cable television service (again, the only
game in town - a monopoly) over 30% without notifying me, or anyone else in
my town. Three days later I was watching Dish Network and have never looked
back. I will never do business with Charter.

You have a choice between AT & T DSL or Comcast Cable. Again, my choice
would be guided by personal reasons. Comcast is responsible for killing one
of the best channels on television, Tech TV. Their merger of Tech TV with
The G4 Network has been heralded as one of the most egregious offenses to
television viewers since the debut of Fox News. I will never do business
with Comcast.

I am very happy with my Qwest DSL service and so far I have had no problems
with it. I would go for the AT & T DSL service.
