Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

I have two friends who both have similar problems. One is running WinXP
Service Pack 1 and the other is running Win2K.

Both are not able to get Autoplay to function, even though it is selected in
Properties and it does not recognize a blank CD-RW. Also, one has a problem
that the drive will not play certain DVD's yet will play other DVD's from
the same Region.

One also can play Audio and Video CDs and DVDs but when he puts a blank
CD-RW in the drive, the machine tells him to insert a disk.

I have removed the drive in Device Manager and allowed Plug and Pray to
reinstall it. No change.

Any clues,

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Hello Tom ,
When was the last time your friends updated the device drivers? Are
the drives able to read data correctly? Check sound cards. It might even pay
to be sure the volume is not muttted. Hey, it happens. As for the DVD player
only playing certain DVD's . I don't think it is the drive. Perhaps dirty or
bootlegged softare. As for not accpecting a blank CD-RW. I had this problem.
I tried to save a buck or two and bought off brand CD's. The problem was
solved after I bought a well know and used brand. Somtimes my CD drive just
will not see or accept a blank CD but it will take the next one of the same
brand . Also, have them use a cleaner for the drives. Then have them go to
the web site of whoever made the PC's for any hardware updates. If this
dosen't help please give a bit more specfic info on the machines.
The best advice you could give the friend with only SP1 is to update
to SP2 b efore fixing the CD drives. Microsoft will soon require SP2 and odds
are the drivers may need to be reinstalled after SP2.
Best of luck to you
Ron J

The problems/solutions may be different for Windows 2K and XP. However, you
may need to check with the DVD drive manufacturers so as to see if there
are/were firmware updates to the DVD drives. Sometimes, the manfacturers
may publish updates to the firmware to fix problems with their drives.

firmware -- embeded software in a chip somewhere on the device (drive) which
controls how the device is to react when accessed.
You can update most drive firmwares in a similar method
like you do BIOS updates. Follow the update directions exactly.
Please also note: warranties do not cover failed firmware
flash updates.
