Hi All

The desktop of a machine running XP pro takes up too much
memory space. I deleted files and other things, but they
reappear at the next logon.

The desktop itself takes up very little memory space, or are you talking about
the number of icons displayed? What files reappear at the next logon? Many
are default icons or do you want to clean the taskbar or toolbar? Need more
info for someone to give proper assistance. To free up memory, run MSCONFIG
and click the startup tab to disable many programs that do not need to load.
Just do not disable your anti-virus program.

Yes, msconfig is addressed in the follownig article, which is used to
perform a clean boot:

In addition, update your anti-virus and perform full virus scan.You may
also go to the following websites to perform a free online virus scan:
