Help! My mother is getting an empty list at the user accounts login. It says
select a user name, but there are none pictured. Its complicated by the fact
that
to log in (using ctrl+alt+del) or enter safe mode, it is asking for a user
name and password. She enters her username, but had never created a password.
Hitting cancel doesn't work, neither does leaving it blank. She's tried
just about every password she can think of that she might have set it as.
Her hard drive crashed and had to be reinstalled about three weeks ago, is
there any sort of default password it might have gone to? Is there any way to
get around this short of reinstalling XP all over again??

Hi,

If her HD crashed and had to be reinstalled then likely her account got damaged.

Depending on what OS Home or Pro you can do a few things.

For Pro at the login screen do CTRL-ALT-DEL 2x to get the login screen. Type Administrator as the login and leave the pwd blank (this is the default install for Pro and Home).

For Home, Restart in safe mode. At the login screen type administrator and leave the pwd blank.

If this doesn't work then you may need to reload XP.

Cheers,

Lara
