Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was recently knocked off line for about 4 days due to a storm. When my
computer came back up, I lost my Windows Media Player 10. I am running a
Windows XP home system. When I try to reinstall any of the Windows Media
Players, I am told that my version of Windows is incompatible with the mediay
system. I am also unable to download alternate media player versions such as
IrFan View.

In addition, I am unable to create a restore point earlier than when my
computer went down, which is something that has never happened before.

Again, thanks in advance for any assistance.

You have a myriad of problems.
you can't install any previous version of Windows media player as you
have the latest one in your system.
Moreover IrfanView is not a media player it's a fast and simple image
viewer and editor that supports all major graphic formats.

IrfanView has a media player plugin available.

Try looking in Program Files for the Windows Media Player folder, and
*move* everything in it out to somewhere else. That might be enough;

You can't *create* restore points earlier than the current time. But
the stored points may be damaged, preventing your returning to one, in
which case the only sensible thing is to Disable it (in Control Panel -
System - System Restore) shut down, reboot and start it up again
