I've recently been given my brother in laws old computer which I've managed
to take back to factory settings and it automatically reinstalled windows xp
for me. I've tried to put on Microsoft Works Suite 2002 and everything works
except for Microsoft Word. It asks me for a product key, but the only product
key I've got is on a sticker on the side of the hard drive case which says
"Windows XP product key". I've tried putting this in but I get a message up
saying it is an invalid product key. I don't have the original CD case or
certificate of authenticity, neither does my b in law. How do I get a new
product key for the Works CD?

The key on the side of the case is the operating system key, and will not
work for what you want to do.
if you wish to install ms works then you need to purchase the product to get
the key. else you are stealing the usage rights.

MS Word is NOT a part of MS Works.

When you restored the computer, it probably restored a TRIAL version of
MS Word, and that trial has long-since expired.

The license key on the computer is for the XP OS, not for any installed
programs. Either locate the CD case with the key or contact the computer
vendor where it was purchased - though I doubt they will help - or purchase
a copy of the Word program or an updated Works program, or use something
like the free Open Office.

The product key was probably attached to the CD case and since you
don't have the original case, the key is gone. Unless you can locate
the product key you may be out of luck and might have to purchase a
copy of Word. Why don't you give Open Office a try? It's free and is
document compatible (*.DOC, *.PPT, *.XLS) with MS Office. The WP
program is called "Writer" and is very much like MS Word.

Because it's not a Microsoft product.

Correct. However it *is* a part of MS Works *Suite*, which is what
Mollyblacklab has.

That's the whole point of recommending OO. It's FREE, unlike the over-priced
bloated piece of junk from Microsoft.

Cheers.

MS Word is NOT a part of MS Works.

The "MS Works suite" also comes as a bundled package with MS Word (full
version) and MS Money (full version).

This is available in Australia, don't know about the US or elsewhere.

I lost the key to Outlook on an old computer and called Microsoft Customer
Service(Sorry don't have the number handy) I explained the situation, they
asked me for some information(name, OS, etc) and gave me a key to
reinstall/activate it. If your brother in law registered it originally, it is
probably still on file under his name and they should help you out. I was
pleasantly surprised by how helpful they were with me. Hope this helps.

Nah. The main reason people go for OO is, to quote the sage: "Because it's
not a Microsoft product."

Anyone who needs certain features (interaction with others who use Microsoft
office suites, etc) will use the product they need to to interact
effectively.

For a regular home user who will be printing out their work or presenting it
in their own manner - Open Office is a fine alternative for.

It would have nothing to do with it being a Microsoft product and more to do
with it being free in some cases - as there are people who have nothing
against Microsoft except that they believe them to be another money-hungry
corporation corrupting the free-world, man... (Sorry - it just didn't sound
right without a nice 'George Carlin' (tm) "man" at the end.. *grin*)

Well, it's free, and a good app for newbies and non-serious users. It's
devoid of several features in MS Word, though, and thus is smaller. I LOVE
open source; don't get me wrong. But serious users need to evaluate whether
open source apps do what they need. If so, great. If not, spend the money
for what does.
