Post subject: MS Messenger vs Live Messenger

I've been asked to install the new Messenger by a user, however, I'm
concerned with the performance impact to our system. IS the Live Messenger
better or worst than MS Messenger on using system resources?

I'm reluctant to install.

Live Messenger needs IE? - trying to get into Live messenger (8.5 beta) it tells me that as Internet Explorer is set to off-line i cant sign in. So it IE a requirement to have/use Messenger? Currently i have no need (as far as i know) to have IE online
