This does not mean that you're all set. Check with the device manager
and with the disk management as well. "Anymore" means that the drive
has been already formatted and that is has been recognized in the past,
most likely. Also not clear if this is an internal or external drive.

Addendum: Assuming an internal drive since showing up in the BIOS. Next
question is what (hardware) changes have been made prior to the problem.

device manager shows in IDE controllers the HD

(after a check for new hardware).

disk drives then installs same (with a balloon tip on

sys tray confirming same).

explorer does not show it or disk management

either.

going back to device manager under Disks, it is

gone!

IDE shows a secondary, but you have to do a re-

scan, and so the loop begins again?!

That's hard to believe. When expanding the IDE controllers, only the
Controller itself and the Primary and Secondary IDE channel show up.

The hard disk shows up when expanding the "Disk drives" section.

It does show exactly as you describe.

maybe I worded it wrong?

But, still the same, no D:drive.

See if that drive appears multiple times (hidden) in the device manager:
"Device Manager does not display devices that are not connected to the
Windows XP-based computer"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539/en-us

If this is the case, remove all entries related to that drive, reboot
and/or run the new hardware wizard. If this doesn't help, you should
consider a hardware problem (second HDD) as well.
