Multiple monitors were working fine. I had to reinstall windowsXP due to an
unrelated problem. Now my notebook doesnt recognize a 2nd monitor. But when
I restart w/ monitor connected, it sets the external as default. It wont
recognize both monitors. Any help / suggestions??

Reinstall video drivers from the laptop manufacturers website...

Update the drivers from the manufacturer - make sure you have all the
utilities you had installed before reinstalled.

Depending on the laptop manufacturer, you should be able to press a key sequence such as Fn+F4 on a HP/Compaq OR Fn+F8 on a Dell to toggle through the different "screen modes" such as LCD only, Ext Monitor only or BOTH.
Do as the others suggested first & install the latest drivers from the manufacturer, reboot & try my suggestion.
Good luck!!
