If I have a briefcase open in Explorer, and then attempt to open a file in
the briefcase through an application, I get a warning box: 'The Briefcase is
in use on another computer. Close the Briefcase on that computer and then try
again'.
Is there a way to avoid this warning message without having to close
Explorer down every time?

Doubtful. The briefcase, or files therein, *is* in use.

However - why use briefcase? That's so old-school!

XP Pro has Offline Files (XP Home doesn't). However, I personally abhor
offline files anyway (and wasn't all that hot about briefcase, either).
