Ok so all I want to do is totally reformat my computer. However, I keep
parallel installing new versions of windows. I want to know how to gain
access to the document and settings of the other operating systems so I can
delete them. I know it can be done, I just forget how. However, my real
question is, can I install a new version of windows which will delete the
other operating systems? I also want to keep 2 partitions. If anyone has any
advice, please respond. Thanks alot.

Hi,

To gain access to the other folders, you take ownership of them.

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421]
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421</a>

To "clean" install, instead of creating a parallel installation, at the
initial part of setup where you chose the installation partition, instead
delete the existing system partition. Then create a new one from the free
space, format, and proceed with the installation.

Thanks for the help. I tried to delete the partition but it tells me it can't
because there are system files that it cannot delete in order for setup to
continue. Where do I go from there?

Hi,

Are you trying to reinstall by starting from within Windows, or by booting
the system from the CD? You need to do the latter.

You are probably trying to install over the top, without actually
formatting. Boot the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license
agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC;
select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be
formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
