Post subject: Playback Freeze Up
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>video (more info?)

I am having a problem and need advice.

My PC is running XP(Home) SP2, 80 GB hard Drive, 768 DIMM Memory and have
two media players, Windows Media Player, Real Player installed. My media
player is a combo DVD-CD ROM Toshiba SD-R2212 plus floppy drive.

This week I rented three newly released films on DVD. The first DVD played
halfway through on Windows Media Player and then froze up. I had to use task
manager to close the program. I then tried the same DVD on Real Player and
again both froze up after choosing a scene to start the movie. Oddly, all
three play the film intro and credits, show the menu but freeze when a menu
item is chosen. I tried the other two DVD films and the same thing happened.

My computer, otherwise, operates satisfactorily and I can play CDs and game
CDs on this combo drive with no problems.

My OEM tech support has no idea why this happens or how to resolve it. I’ve
run scan disk, clean disk, reconfigured start up on msconfig, removed the
combo drive and reseated the cables, updated all drivers. About the only
thing they did not have me do was to change the oil in my auto.

I checked my system event manager and here's what it shows:
Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 7
Source: Cdrom
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_BAD_BLOCK
Message: The device, %1, has a bad block.

Explanation
The device has a bad block of memory, which Windows attempted to read. The
data might be missing or corrupted.

Any and all suggestions to resolve this problem would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you for your time.
