Hi,

Any sure fire methods for preventing XP sp2 from automatically
restoring a uninstalled
device driver; in this case the 1394 net adapter driver? FTR, I've
already renamed
the the current nic1394.sys file in the system32 drivers folder, and
renamed sp2.cab,
and I disconnected from the internet before uninstalling the driver via
device manager,
but it still successfully replaces it every time. I recall there's a
registry entry
with the path to the back up drivers store that you can edit, but I
can't recall
where it is in the reg.

I'm trying to install a 3rd party firewire external sound card, but It
won't work
till I prevent the 1394 net adapter from re-installing first (I got
this scheme to
work on a prior xp sp2 instance).

Thanks for any tips!!!

Is the net adaptor the "onboard" type or a separate PCI card? You can
disable it in the BIOS (onboard type) or remove the card (PCI card type).
Then reenable it when you have your sound card operating.

The reason its restoring the drivers, at a guess is that Windows searches
the CAB files (where the Windows install files are located so that you don't
need the CD every time you want to install a windows component etc).
