I needed to reformat and reinstall a complete system on a Dell computer that was being donated to a
charity.
The original disk provided by Dell was XP Pro SP1a.
Rather than install that disk and then SP2 I wanted to slipstream SP2 with the original.
When I attempted to use the instructions from
(www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp) which I have done successfully on
several XP HE SP1 disks I kept getting an error message about the original disk already updated.
I then tried "Autoslipstreamer" and every thing seemed to go just fine. However when I reinstalled
XP on the computer, a check showed I only had SP1. Not even SP1a. I had to then run the SP2 update
anyway.
Can anyone shed some wisdom on why the winsupersite processes would not let SP2 join a SP1a disk.
and why I only get a SP1 when I should have married SP2 with the SP1a disk. >> Stay informed about: Problem slipstreaming to XP Pro SP1a |

I'm sorry about this but could you please allow me to use your question to
ask my question. I'm getting a pop-up blocker message everytime I try to make
a new question. That happened yesterday, after 1 month of not being online
here at this website, but as soon as I went into Internet Options and
disabled Pop-Up Blocker I could ask a question. That was yesterday! Today is
another story and another aggravation. Here's another aggravation, my dog is
barking up a storm, brb. I've gone into internet options and allowed just
about everything possible and put this website as a trusted site. I'm at the
end of my rope.
Anyways, here goes, if anyone is going to see it anyways, because I'm not
going to type it out again on another question.
My PC is getting an error message saying " Operating system not found" .
What do you think I should do? The boot order is floppy, hard drive, and then
CD-ROM. "Richard in AZ" wrote:

And this is where the process runs into a problem between Dell's practice
and the limits of slipstreaming.

Yup, this often happens with Dell disks. It's not SP2 that is applied,
it's other hotfixes.

Yes, slipstreaming frequently does not work on Dell disks where other
updates have already been incorporated. Unfortunately this seems to be a
limitation of the process. I'll suggest that Autostreamer (which is
otherwise great) just isn't reporting the error when it fails.
So this leaves you with needing to have a copy of the SP2 file on hand
(which you do, since you tried to slipstream) so that you can run SP2
install as soon as the base install finishes. And *then* you can go and
get the numerous other updates.

Most likely the Dell disk is the problem.
By the way, short of doing an installation, is there a way to tell if SP2 was successfully
integrated into an XP disk? >> Stay informed about: Problem slipstreaming to XP Pro SP1a |

Check the file dates. I can't tell you offhand what the SP2 datestamps will
be, but they will differ. You should be able to pick a file or two as a
reliable reference.
