Post subject: Problems.... Hijacked?

Hello, I am new to this forum. I joined because I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me out with this problem my family and I have had with our computer.

It has become extremely slow over the past few months, with pop-ups frequently appearing. This is fustrating to the point of tears. I have tried downloading Spybot S&D, and that has mildly worked (computer is a tiny bit faster), although the pop-ups still keep coming. There is an icon on the bottom right of the screen called QuickBrowser that I think might be the problem. I have tried to find it's source so I can delete it, but it is not listed anywhere except for the icon. Another icon that frequently appears is My Daily Horoscopes. I have tried deleting this, but it reappears evey time I reboot.

I have done a bit of research, and I realize I may need to download a Hijack-This, or something along those lines. Please, if anyone can help me with this problem, I would be very grateful. My mom won't stop bothering me to get it fixed..... Thanks in advanced.

-Joe

Joe,

From the Symantec site, this is how to get rid of QuickBrowser

Important: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the registry before
making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in
permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify the specified keys only. Read
the document, "How to make a backup of the Windows registry," for
instructions.

Click Start > Run.
Type regedit

Then click OK.

Navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane, delete the value:

"QBRSR"="%Windir%\QuickBrowser.exe"

Exit the Registry Editor.

According to Symantec, there is an Adware program called My Daily Horoscope
that can be uninstalled from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. My gut is
that if you have these two, you've got a lot more.

You need an education in this stuff. Here's a good place to start.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (personal free version)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the signature files (pattern files) by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt202.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
Cool Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point
10) Please report back your results

Dave
