Registry Source Path Location

Thanks, David. Here's what I have: I had the original version of
WinXP Pro on my machine and have kept up with all the patches. I don't
thoroughly understand the slipstream process. Also, I had purchased my
PC with WinXP already installed and I assumed it was legitimate. It
wasn't!!! So I purchased the paid version which has SP-1 and SP-2
incorporated. i386 is in my root directory. Is there anything I can
do? Thanks.....

Just checked this out and the SourcePath is correct. However, I keep
getting asked for the CD. So, I put the CD in the drive - but it balks
at every file. I think, some time ago, that when I received the
Genuine Advantage CD, I put the new i386 files in the root directory.
I'm in a mess.

If the following file exists then the folder is already at SP2 level...
c:\I386\SP2.CAB

If not...

You can download the administrator's version of WinXP SP2 at...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e...30-8245

It's ~260MB so it'll take a while.

Assuming the downloaded EXE file is named; c:\WinXP-SP2.exe
You would then run the following command line.

c:\WinXP-SP2.exe -u -s:c:\

This will slip-stream the c:\386 folder to SP2 level.

Then the C:\386 folder probably isn't at SP2 level.

The file SP2.cab is in my i386 folder. If I understand correctly, if I
just change the SourcePath in the Registry, System File Checker should
work without the CD - correct?

Didn't work. SourcePath in the Registry is C:\
The Windows Files are in C:\i386. Perhaps the files in i386 were
copied from my old system and not the Genuine Advantage CD I have now.
Any ideas?

I did find that there two other places in the Registry that point to a
folder where I USED to store my i386 folder (HKCU l InstallLocationsMRU
with a Name of 'a'. Type og REG_SZ and Data of C:\Windows XP Files
(where I used to keep my i386 folder). Also HKU l and same Name, Type
and Data as the previous location. I can't remember why this is set
this way. I don't think I did this.

The Source Path is located in :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup and look
for SourcePath.

Also the reason for getting the need for the Windows XP Home or
Professional Edition CD-Rom is: " Files that are required for Windows to run
properly must be copied to the DLL Cache." Insert your Windows CD-Rom now.

Also normally that path to the i386 folder is C:\WINDOWS\Driver
Cache\i386

What you need to do is to use Nero or similar product and create a
Virtual CD of the Windows XP CD-rom on one of your Hard Drive, not just the
i386 Folder.

The SourcePath would now point to the Virtual CD not the CD or DVD
drive.

Also, if you wished to Slipstream the newest upcoming Windows XP Service
Pack 3, follow the instructions here:

better.

I need help getting my PC i386 in order. I'll explain why in another
post - perhaps in a few days. I'll title the post: Need i386 HELP
If you will, please watch for it. There are three places in my Registry
which point to where I used to keep i386 (not in C:\)

the OS in the first place.

David, I would have to call you on the telephone to explain where I am
with this issue. I tried to type it - but it's too confusing. Would
you consider a call? I don't think it would take too long. Also, I
have Skype.
