Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>work_remotely (more info?)

I have Windows XP Pro SP3 using Windows Live One Care as my firewall the pc
that is requesting me for assitance is running the same Windows XP Pro SP3
using Windows Live One Care as the firewall
We selected Remote Assistance in Windows Live Once Care firewall ports
setttings on both pc's

But when he sends me a request to connect to his pc I get this event message
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Remote Assistance
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5274
Date: 10/8/2008
Time: 6:51:09 PM
User: N/A
Computer: TGKW001
Description:
Expert (local user: TGKW001\Thomas R Grassi Jr) has opened the following

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Also the message on my screen says unable to resolve dns name of remote
workstation

We both use DSL but from different providers. Maybe the DSL modem is
blocking port 3389 ?

I have one additonal pice of equipment on my home network and that is a
LnkSys DSL Router I am looking at that but I can not find any thing in its
config

Any help would be great

Thanks

Tom

You need TCP Port 3389 open on any router or firewall the PCs are behind.
Some DSL modems are also routers so you would need to open TCP Port 3389 on
the DSL modem also or place it into a bridge or pass through mode. Check the
documentation for that. If the devices support UPnP then that should, but
not always, open TCP Port 3389. See this article for an explanation of NAT
devices, ie. routers, and UPnP...

You might look at TeamViewer or CrossLoop as alternatives.
