Having just reinstalled Windows XPPro, I find there is a "ripple" effect when
I scroll through documents or menus. Previously, the text had just moved
crisply up or down. How do I solve this please?

Captain,

Presume you've installed and updated your video drivers.
A couple of things to try:

Right click the desktop and click on Properties => Settings tab =>
Advanced button => Troubleshoot tab

Knock the Hard ware acceleration slider back a notch or two.

-------------------------------- or:

Desktop => Properties => Settings tab => Advanced button => Monitor tab
Try a different Refresh rate.
