I have started to upgraade a Laptop from 98 to XP SP1. The upgrade started OK
however it locked up during this process (left it for 30 mins and nothing
happened still said 76 mins to completion). Re-booted the laptop and now it
powers on but doesn't boot and nothing appears on the screen, the keyboard
doesnt respond either.

Anyone with any clues as to the problem this would be appreciated.

I had the same problem installing Windows XP on my desktop. It would go to 34 minutes remaining and then just stop. It turned out it was my Microsoft IntelliMouse plugged in through usb that was causing the problem. I changed it to PS2 instead and had no problems. I don't know how that applies to your case but if you have any usb devices, maybe try unplugging those before you install Windows.

You should NOT upgrade but when you inserted the XP CD it gave you a choice
of a clean install and that is the one you wanted. You'll need to insert
the XP CD
and start anew with a clean install so it will format the harddrive and delete
Win98, too late for a dual boot. You'll need to reinstall all new drivers
and all your programs. Set your BIOS to boot from the CD-Rom drive, probably

Also, while installing XP select NTFS file system, not FAT32, it will ask you.
