I am driving out of town to help a relative with a "blue screen"
"Unmountable_Boot_Volume"
"Stop 0x000000ED"

I am planning on using her XP home edition CD, entering the repair option to
running "chkdsk/r" and if that does not work a "fixboot" command.
If I can't boot from CD - I think I am screwed. (I think I should be able
to)

If it doesn't work I am thinking I will install a new hard drive (to boot
from) and then hooking up her damaged one as a slave and seeing if I can get
her data that way.

If I get it to boot I will do a full system backup.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Unless she was fiddling in the BIOS or made some hardware changes, the most
likely suspect is a corrupt file system The chkdsk /r should resolve that.
Fixboot will not.

The chkdsk /r fixed the problem.
If that hadn't worked I was going to try Fixboot because of the info found
here
<a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q297185/" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q297185/</a>

After installing the backup from XP disk (home edition) found out I could
not copy directly to CD-RW drive.
(why not?)
I temporarily installed another HD and backed up to it.

Hi,

Glad it's working. Also, the XP backup utility does not support burning
backups directly to CDR/RW.

Sometimes chkdsk /r alone will fix this, sometimes it requires fixboot as well.
