Running xp sp2 on Dell Dimension 8200. O/S originally ME...had Dell upgrade
to XP.
XP SP2 downloaded (not on cd). Trying to run system file checker and get
message to insert cd. Don't have cd. Have tried solution in knowledge base
article
900910 and still doesn't work...keep getting insert cd message. I have
looked through Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and Dell support forums.
Lots of info but
none seems to work. Is there any way I can run SFC /Scannow without the XP
SP2
cd ? Even though I have modifed the registry key as required by KB900910, I
am
a novice would very much appreciate any help.
Thank You

This is one bad thing about the way in which an OS is supplied on OEM
machines.. neither sfc or the 'repair function are available.. the concept
seems to be that the average user has nothing meaningful saved, so what is
the harm in only offering a complete manufacturer system restore 'back to
factory'

Mike,

FYI:
I, too, have a Dell 8200. I have used SCF. The Dell "Restore Disc" suffices
for providing the information. I don't know for sure, since I haven't tried,
but I would assume that a "Restore Partition" would too.

I think that the concept is that they (the OEM's) know that the end user
will eventually need a "real" Windows cd so they will have to pay to
obtain one, in essence making unwitting customers pay for what they
essentially more or less already paid for! Microsoft of course will say
nothing and wash their hands of this despicable practice, saying that
the issue is with the OEM only. Of course Microsoft gains from this
scurrilous practice because many of these frustrated OEM customers end
up going to a local store to buy a retail Windows version so Microsoft
has a vested interest in keeping the practice alive.

With product activation and the piracy provisions that Microsoft now has
in place there is no reason for this obscene practice to be allowed to
continue. Microsoft could simply tell the OEM's that they MUST include
a real Windows CD with the sale of the computer, that would add about a
whole 50 cents to the cost of the goods sold. Of course those who
defend the practice will say that it is up to the customer to ask for
the cd when they order or buy the computer, or that this is the way the
free market operates. Probably true but unfortunately not all consumers
know all there is to know about these things and even in a free market
consumer interests have to be protected by laws when the sellers make it
a habit of taking advantage of unsuspecting customers.

Actually the real underlying cause of this situation is the cost of
telephone support, and the fact that the overwhelming majority of
support issues are user-inflicted such as virus/spyware infestations,
incompatible applications being installed, or hardware add-ons with
buggy/defective drivers.

By providing a "system recovery" disk or partition instead of an
installation CD the OEMs can just tell the customer to do a system
recovery and if that solves the problem (and it does in the vast
majority of instances) then the OEM is absolved of any responsibility
for the original problem.

I saw a report a couple of years ago that indicated that the average
cost of a technical support telephone call was $45, including all of
the overhead, supervision, and facility costs. With the low prices
of computer hardware it only takes an average just over one support
call per computer sale to wipe out the entire profit.

Thanks for the heads up on the Dell supplied CD being able to manage SFC..
it all depends on the kind of CD supplied by manufacturers..

The OP has taken a tortuous route to get to SP2. Inability to
use System File Checker is one thing but inability to boot
could be the next problem.

Doesn't the inability to use Repair Install only apply to own
brand systems but not to the generic OEM Windows XP?
Another problem is the implications of restore disks.

I agree the whole area is full of problems.

Wouldn't telephone support be less expensive if they
substituted less problematic software for Norton and
McAfee products presently offered?

Since the fixitall is to run the restore disk, I think the user learns

True, but then all the majors (and one of the bigger one in particular)
make it a point in their advertising of telling consumers how absolutely
great their tech support is. The guys that never sleep... where the
lights never get turned off. When people buy from them they even try to
up sell them extended support. You can't have your cake and eat it too...

If they gave real cd's to the customers maybe they would get fewer calls
because the customers could at least try to fix their computers instead
of having to call the support department for all kinds of minor problems
that can be fixed using a real Windows CD.

Either that or they know that if they call they will be put on "ignore"
for an hour and a half only to be then "served" by someone who barely
understand or speaks any languages that the caller speaks, let alone
provide accurate answers for problems not on their short scripted list!
