Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>newusers (more info?)

As it happens I was renaming some files and the program also changed the
names for the system files in the root (C) drive, hence next time I boot it
stated that NTDLR etc.. were not found.

I repaired this issue by using the install disk and running repair. The
aftermath it seems is that ie7 & MediaPlayer 11 were 'unloaded' and the
computer does not recognise the previously performed system updates.

The first two problems I fixed by reinstalling the two softwares but now my
microsoft auto update continues to tell me to install MS Window Installer
3.1 (which was already installed). Even when I allow the auto installer to
attempt to reinstall this program, the event fails.

Now, this auto update feature and the MS update site do not recognise my
previous updates nor allow me to reinstall these updates again. How do I
solve this problem and either have my system reinstall the previous updates
or recognise them.

Hope that is reasonably clear... Thanks in advance.

After updates - After i got updates and resarted i had an icon for a camear i don't have. it's a hp starter camera. it won't let my web camera work. i don't know how to get rid of it. it's not in add/remove programs.

MS auto-updates - It seems that recently, a great amount of pop-up, ads, etc have been slipping into the updates that MS sends out. My 2 AV programs seem to be catching most of them (?) but I would like to turn off the auto-update process, but can't seem to figure out..
