I have XP Home Edition installed. My friend tells me that if one of the
parts on the Box fails, or is in danger of failing, XP will tell me. This
helps to correctly identify parts in the Box that need to be repaired. Is
this right?

Not in my experience.

Windows XP doesn't have hardware diagnostics as part of the
operating system. When components are failing/failed you'll get
errors or things will stop working but XP won't post up a msg
like "Your Sound card is failing....". About the only thing that has
some degree of self-monitoring is disk drives that use SMART.
But this is a internal function of the drive, not XP.

There are all kinds of utilities to help isolate problems, some are
built in to XP (DXDiag, Chkdsk).
Diagnostics is still a "Human" responsibility - all the PC can do is
supply clues as to what is wrong.
