Turn off computer

I recently installed Windows XP Upgrade over Windows ME
on my HP laptop and since the installation I have not
been able to turn off the computer by selecting turn off
computer on start button. I have to turn off by power
switch on computer. Please give me advice as to what I
might try to get it to work properly.
