Hi,
We have a new Sharepoint website which uses the WebDav folders on it. From
a windows Vista machine and some Windows XP machines it is fine but we have a
set of Windows XP machines on which the Folder browsing (the Explorer View)
is slower than normal and actually makes it very difficult to work with. I
have tested on a Windows Vista client and all works fine, however on the XP
machines the Explorer says "not responding" and the screen doesn't redraw.
I applied KB907306 which improved the situation, explorer doesn't seem to
hang anymore - but it does still take a long time to be able to navigate the
folders - comparing the windows vista to xp machines - the vista is almost
instantaneous and the xp machine takes 20-30 seconds each time a folder is
selected for it to display the contents and for them to be activate - and
selectable by the client user.
File name: C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\OLEDB~1\MSDAIPP.DLL
File size: 1011488
ProgID: MSDAIPP.WEBFOLDERFORMS.1
DLL version: 12.0.4518.1014
My question is, how can I troubleshoot this problem further, it does seem to
be a client specific problem.
Thank you.

Hello,
Thank you for your post.
First of all, I'd like to double confirm whether the issue only occurs on
some of (but not all of) the Windows XP computers there. Based on the
current status, I will mainly focus on the Windows XP side. Please
understand that if this issue is identified to be a server side problem in
the future, you can then post a new thread in our SharePoint newsgroup.
microsoft.public.sharepoint.general
Having said the above, the following is some suggestion for your reference:
Please check whether you have installed the latest Windows XP service pack
on the Windows XP computers on which the issues occur.
About way to obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP, you might refer
to the following article:
How to obtain the latest Windows XP service pack
http://vkbexternal/vkbwebservice/ViewContent.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;322389&Porta
lId=1
Moreover, the following KB article provides five methods for resolving
similar issues on Windows XP computers.
You experience a delay when you use your Windows XP computer to log on to a
domain or to connect to a network resource
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;832161
You could try the above methods and check whether this will help.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. : )

Hi Neo,
Yes your assumptions are correct. It's the XP machines, not all of them
though, the ones that aren't working have the following info you might find
useful :
1) They are running XP SP2 with Windows Update running, so all latest fixes
are applied.
2) They are not using a proxy server (and there isn't one available) - so
they don't have any settings in IE (6.0 and 7.0) for proxy. The problem
affects both IE6.0 and IE7.0 the same. IE7.0 version number is : 7.0.5730.11
3) My laptop XP laptop has the same problem, and it doesn't have anything in
common with the other xp machines, it was pre-loaded with XP.
4) My windows Vista machines work fine, so lets please concentrate on
Windows XP.
5) The webclient is listed as the last Network provider - under Microsoft
Terminal services and Microsoft Network. - Moving it's position does not
affect the symptoms.
I'll read 832161 again but it seems to conentrate on proxy settings, which
don't seem relevant.

Hello Ian,
Thank you for your reply.
In order to narrow down the issue, I'd like to check the network
environment and firewall settings first.
Please verify whether the Windows XP machines on which the issues occur are
located in the same LAN where the Web Server is located or not.
Please check whether there are any third-party firewall installed on those
Windows XP machines. If yes, please try to disable all firewall on those XP
machines and have another try.
Please let me know the answer of the above two questions. Also, at the same
time, I will keep researching this issue for you.
Thanks.

Hi Neo,
There is no 3rd party firewall on some of the machines and on my machine
(for example) there is and it doesn't matter if I disable it or not, the
result is the same. The vista machine is running the same 3rd party firewall
without issue.
On the machines running windows firewall, turning it off - results in the
same problem.
The sharepoint server is not a "local" server but is added into the trusted
sites in IE7.0.
Thanks

Hello,
As you know, incompatible or corrupted programs launched during startup
could cause unexpected problems. Therefore, to determine whether this is
the case, I recommend you boot the system into Safe mode with networking on
those XP machines and check whether the issue still occurs.
You could also refer to the following KB article to perform a clean boot as
well.
How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;316434
Please let me know after you finish the test.
Thanks.

Hi Neo,
I've just booted up in safe mode with networking and the web folder
navigation is much improved, I can't open a pdf file, but that is probably
something to do with the acrobat install rather than anything else.
I'll do a clean boot now and see what happens.
We're making progress...now just need to identify why it works in safemode
but not in normal mode!

Hello Ian,
Thanks for your update.
To narrow down the issue, please try an advanced clean boot and follow the
below steps:
1. Remove unsigned drivers and have another test.
If the issue no longer occurs, the issue was caused by a third-party
unsigned filter or function driver.
2. Log on as a new user, or create a new user account, and then test the
new logon.
3. Turn off third-party services and have another try.
Safe mode and Safe mode with networking do not load third-party services.
Under current scenario, the problem may be caused by a third-party service
that is loading.
4. Check whether there are any different programs installed between the XP
machines on which the issue occurs and on which the issue doesn't exist. If
you find the difference, please uninstall these programs and have another
test.
5. Please also check whether there are any difference on hardware level as
well as software level between XP machines which work well and which don't.
Please also refer to KB 316434 when doing an advanced clean boot, as there
are some important notes you must pay attention to.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;316434
Please let me know after you finish the test.
Thanks. : )

Neo,
Lets take a step back (or several) because I have just discovered my
analysis was incorrect. Webfolders cannot run under safe mode and as such,
that test is invalid.
Under safemode the WebClient service does not run and will not run.
Exploring the website - folder navigation, works but file transfer does not.
using msconfig. If I disable all "non-microsoft" services and stop all
startup programs loading. The webclient service starts and the same slow
folder navigation and file navigation are shown. So it doesn't seem to be
anything to do with any software running on the machine.
My heart sank when I realised that using msconfig the webclient service had
been stopped - so it was never going to work properly. With the Webclient
service running and a fresh reboot - without any non-ms software running -
the slow folder viewing and file viewing is still seen.
Regards
Ian

Ian,
was not sure if my last post went through. Downoload and install .Net

this resolved it. Hope that helps. >> Stay informed about: WebDav - WebFolders - Slow on XP clients |

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm sorry but I should have noticed that the webclient service is disabled
under safe mode. Let's keep investigating on this issue. : )
Please have another test in this way. Create a new virtual directory on IIS
Server and just create some small-size documents (for example, *.txt files)
under this directory. After that, try to access this new web folder from
XP machine and then check whether the issue still occurs.
Please do the test with a clean boot.
If the issue still exists, please capture network monitor traces on XP
machines for further investigation.
Please do as follows:
1. Please download and install network monitor on XP machine from the
following link:
Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-
8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en
2. Run Network Monitor. On the start page, please select the correct NIC to
monitor. Go to File-> New -> Capture.
3. Press F10 to start the capture
4. Open the webfolder on XP machine.
5. When the delay issue occurs again, Stop the Capture (Capture -> Stop)
6. Save the Capture, By default, the file path is: C:\Documents and
Settings\Account Name\My Documents\My Network Monitor\Captures
Please do the capture twice on two XP machines, on one the issue occurs and
on the other doesn't.
After that, please send me the result *.cap files to vjpzhu.DeleteThis@microsoft.com
Please also tell me the IP addresses of your two XP machines and your IIS
Server.
Regarding way to use Network Monitor, please refer to the following article:
How to use Network Monitor to capture network traffic
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812953
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. : )
