Post subject: Windows Firewall/Norton IS 2005

I uninstalled Norton IS 2005 with their removal tool from the Symantec
site. It seemed to do a good job and all was well.However, my "Windows
Security Center" still says "NortonInternet Security is currenlty ON."
Why would it still say Norton IS is ON when it's not even installed?
I've deleted all the residueSymantec/Norton folders left on my drive
by the removal tool and haveremoved almost all of the Norton/Symantec
registry items.

I am now using NOD32 and Comodo Firewall Pro.

Any help, please?

Which tool, and which version of the tool?

I thought the removal tool was supposed to remove all the residual
registry entries. It sounds like you did this manually. If this is the
case, I wonder why the tool didn't work (assuming it was the proper tool
and proper version). I guess it's just another case of Norton being the
rude houseguest who refuses to leave!

If nothing else works, there's always RegCleaner:

This will allow you to safely remove all Norton/Symantec traces.

This problem can be fixed by rebuilding the WMI repository. If you have Windows XP SP2 installed, run this command:

rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository
(Click Start, Run and type the above command)

No, it does not remove _all_ of the registry entries. The tool didn't
work because Norton doesn't know _how_ to make it work thoroughly and
I guess they don't want to have the tool mess with the registry. Yes,
a rude houseguest which is why I kicked them out after two-years Smile

I am following Brian's instructions in his posts but thanks for

Well, Brian, I searched the registry for all of those Norton/Symantec
references, including NIS, NAV, and firewall and only came up with
a reference (for nav) as "navw32.exe" but could not find that .exe on
my computer. However, I did find an empty Norton folder in my program
files (which I thought I had deleted), I threw it away.

The Security Center still says "Norton Internet Security is currently
running".

I did find this in the topics in antivirus/firewall:

"Which antivirus and firewall programs does the Security Center
detect?The Security Center can detect if you are using firewall or
antivirus software on your computer. However, it can't detect all
firewall and antivirus solutions.

There are some antivirus and firewall solutions that the Security
Center does not detect at all. This group includes all hardware
firewall solutions, such as network routers. For more information,
click Related Topics.

Some antivirus and firewall programs are designed so that information
about the programs can be reported to the Security Center. Such
programs can provide specific information about their status, such as
whether or not an antivirus signature file is out of date.

status. _However, the Security Center can only detect whether or not
such a program is installed on your computer; it can't report the

I guess Windows still thinks Norton is here and running. Why, I don't

The command repairs the WMI Repository. More details are available here.

WMI Isn't Working!:

If that does not help, you may need to manually rebuild the WMI repository as per the steps in that article. That ought to fix the Windows Security Center incorrect reporting problem.
