Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2 with all the latest patches.

Recently I needed to reload my OS and all of my supplemental software
programs.

ABBY FineReader v5.0 Sprint came bundled with two of my software products:
Dell AIO Printer A940 and Microtek ScanMaker 6100 Pro.

ABBY FineReader will not load with either of these programs.

The error I am getting is:
"Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A
program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your
support personnel or package vendor."

I have already checked Microsoft's website for any indication of problems
but had no luck.

When I checked my Windows Installation Package, I found something
interesting. The patch that is loaded on my system is KB893803V2 - Rel Date
05/12/05 The version that was on before I reloaded was KB893803-x86 - Rel
Date 04/11/05. Could that be my problem?

Thank you for your time -- ML

893803 is installer 3.1,however as each installer gets "installed" it's
behavior
changes in services.Try going to run, type:services.msc In msc scroll to
installer,
R.click,in properties, you'll find after 3.1 was installed it's now in
manual start,
change to auto,start service,close-out.

You should be contacting Dell, not Microsoft. ABBY fine reader is not a
Microsoft product.
Check the Dell web site for updated drivers or log into their support KB.

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried it and still got the same error. When I dug deeper into the ABBY installation process, it appears that they have their own propritary version of windows installer and there must be something hard coded in there that is looking for information from a previous Windows Installer.

I'll try to remove the newer version and replace it with the old one. Not sure if Microsoft will let me do it but I think if I try to take it out it should revert back to an older version. If not, I'll run 'sfc' to see if I can get an old working version back.

Lucky for me, I just made an offline backup of my entire system on Friday night.

Thanks again -- ML

Perhaps you didn't read my post carefully. The error that I included was a Windows error. The Dell suggestion is moot because Dell is the hardware and the ABBYY software was 'bundled' with the Dell software.

The inclusion of Dell and Microtek hardware notations may have made the post confusing but it is a copy of the message that I sent to ABBY's technical support group and the reason I included those names was I assumed ABBY would know which companies have contracted them for bundling.

ABBY is a separate company that sells OCR software. The Dell printer should provide OCR through the ABBY software (if I can get it loaded).

Thanks for the suggestion anyway -- ML
