I can't update an installation of XP Home Sp2 from the Microsoft site.

The downloads complete and the installation routine progresses but then it
reports that the installation has failed.
Digging into why I get the following error..
Error Code: 0x80070005

I can't see any obvious solution relating to this code, can anybody help
out?

Derek

Are you trying to install the Windows SP2 update or trying to install an
update on a machine that already has SP2 updated?

Your problem is related to authentication. Is this a standalone or
networked computer? Are you logging on as Administrator?

Hope this helps.

I found this on the update site..

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you see the
0x800A01AD error while looking for updates

Problem description
This error message may occur if you have insufficient permissions to the
Windows Update registry keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read
errors 0x80070005 and 0x80080005.

Applicable operating systems

a.. Windows XP

b.. Windows Server 2003

Resolutions
1. Check permissions on the Windows Update registry key
1.. Click Start.
2.. Choose Run.
3.. In the Run box, type REGEDIT.
4.. Click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
*WARNING*
Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
5.. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate.
6.. On the menu, click Edit. Click Permissions.
7.. For Administrator and System, select the Allow check boxes next
to Full Control and Read permissions. NOTE: In certain instances, these
check boxes are grayed out. Ensure all accounts have appropriate
permissions.
8.. Click Apply.
9.. Click OK.
10.. Close the Registry Editor.
11.. Restart the system.

No luck. The key that Regmon gives an "access denied" message when I try the
Update routine is shown as

HKCR\gp3_auto_file which is some old entry that must be left over from a
guitar program according to google but it may be significant as I can't
remove or access it. I just get the message

"you do not have permission to view current permission settings for... etc".

Any more advice greatly appreciated...

You did not answer this question!

Your problem is related to authentication. Are you logging on as
Administrator?

I solved the problem. I managed to add user permissions to the key which
still wouldn't allow me to delete the key but did allow updates to run ok.
Weird or what??

Being logged in as administrator is about permissions.

That was the thing though. I was in the only account which was an
administrator account. For some reason, this apparently unconnected registry
key was not letting any access to itself until I managed to add permissions,
which took a fair bit of fiddling about..
