Post subject: Windows cannot find CD or CD/DVD devices

Somehow my OS lost sight of the CD drive device (nor can it detect the new DVD writer device). I have NO CD DEVICE FOLDER OR FILES IN 'MY COMPUTER' DEVICE MGR. 'HARDWARE' FOLDER. Even the 6 bootable floppy disk system restore method did not restore the CD folder & files, neither did my 'back in time' system restore method (problem pre-exists current 'earliest restore point'). All connections for new device are the same. The old device was reconnected - same problem.

Windows XP FAILS TO FIND my CD device AND DEVICE MGR has NO FOLDER FOR CD/DVD drive.

Does to BIOS find the CD/DVD drives. (Please stop saying folder, they're directorys, you are also saying folder when they are not even directorys, device manager displays every thing in/as drop downlists.)

Give this a try:

1. Click on START button, the click on RUN.

2. Enter REGEDIT and press Enter.

3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Or you can download http://users.adelphia.net/~abraxas/dl/FiltersRemove.reg (this reg file) to do the same thing.

I deleted those files, but nothing happened. My CD Drive is still not there. What was supposed to happen?

They where not files, they where registary entries. Does the CD drive register with the BIOS? (I'v alredy asked this, but you seemed to not read my post)

Sparda, thanks for your post. Sorry, but just because I didn't mention anything about BIOS in my post doesn't mean I have not read your post. It was just easier to follow Abraxas instructions. How do I check, if the CD drive registers with the BIOS. Thanks.

You can tell if the CDdrive registered with the BIOS by looking at the post screen when you tunr the computer on, it should look some thing like this:
