Post subject: XP CD Burner corrupted my JPG and MPG files? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

Hi, I hope a bright spark out there can shed some light on this big
problem I'm having.
I was planning to back-up some photos to CD. Basically I dragged
several picture folders from "my pictures" to the appropriate folder
for burning using the inbuilt XP burning facility. When I realised
there was too much data for the CD capacity, I removed one of the
subfolders from the burning folder. If my memory serves me correctly I
received a burning error at the conclusion of the process, but the data
on the CD seemed ok afterwards. However afterwards the original data in
the "My Pictures" folder on my PC will not open. I get a red X when
trying to open JPGs and quicktime / media player returns the message
that my movie files are not valid. I have good copies of the files that
was burnt to the CD, but the existing subfolder that I removed from the
burning folder (as the data was too large for the CD) cannot be opened
on my PC and is not backed up.
I have tried Infranview etc, with no luck. I have also tried the demo
of pixrecovery with no success.
I read somewhere that this could be a case of corrupted file
permissions due to the CD burning software in XP. This sounds more
likely than a straight corruption. The file data (size etc) has not
appeared to change.
I've become a victim of corruption during the process of backing up
(the thing I was trying to protect myself against by backing up in the
first place!)
Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers,
Eamonn. >> Stay informed about: XP CD Burner corrupted my JPG and MPG files? |

When burning files to a CD, make sure that you always COPY and PASTE and
NEVER ***CUT*** and PASTE to the CD drive you intend to burn to. This may
not have caused the problems you are seeing, but I lost a whole set of
digital photos this way.
Also, if you plan on using XP Explorer features for burning, it's probably
a better idea to "delete temporary files" and start over copying them to
the temp area rather than deleting files or folders from the temporary
area.
You should find a good CD burning program that also verifies the burn after
it is done. I know Nero does this, but I am looking for an application
that does not damage disks without doing the burn. Someone told me to
disable the XP recording function in the Properties of the drive, but I am
pissed that Nero did not do it on install if it knows that there can be a
problem. I have some totally blank CDs that I would like to recover and
use because XP and Nero developed a problem while trying to burn them and
made the CD unusable.
Lately I have been seeing too many problems with CD burning in general for
a problem that should not really exist. I have not-even-2-year old HP
portable with a Toshiba CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, supposedly reputable, and I am
not happy to be getting rate of 1 out of 2 to 2 out of 3 disks successfully
burned. I should be seeing at least a 98% successful burn rate.
I am also getting pissed that XP is burning a multi-session CD and closing
it off after the 2nd or 3rd session! What is with that??? >> Stay informed about: XP CD Burner corrupted my JPG and MPG files? |

Patient Guy,
Thanks for your comments. I'm pretty sure I didnt cut/paste to the
burning folder. I still have the files in their original folder in "my
pictures". They look the same size and type, but just wont open!
Somehow the burning process / error corrupted the files. Does windows
XP modify the existing files during a burn and restore them at its
completion? If so its got to make you wonder.....
At least the problems you mention refer to the burnt CD failing, and
the existing files are ok I hope.
