Version: MS Windows XP Pro SP2 (all updates installed to date)

All of sudden I have started having problems on the Welcome\logon
screen. All of the users appear on screen and I can bring the password
box up. But there is no cursor in the password box and you cannot type
the password. The account without a password (locked down guest
account) works but not the password protected users. I have to CTRL +
ALT + DELETE to get to the old logon screen if I want to get in.

Does any body have any suggestions?

I've noticed this too - just in the last few days, and I'm wondering if
it's a bug in the latest patches. It's not happening every time for me;
just periodically, but on two of my machines.

The other thing I noticed is there's now a language indicator (eg "EN")
next to the user name, which wasn't there before.

I have expereinced the exact same thing. Must be a recent bug with one
of the updates lately.

Hello,
this must be a new bug. I encountered it two weeks or so ago, and since
then it appeared on all 3 computers which I manage.
(Remember the other bug which creaped in a few months ago? Suddenly
Word or Excel would hang in the Open File dialog.
The bug appeared out of a sudden, and it disappeared with one of the
next patches. Let's hope the same happens with this new bug.)
Seems like Microsoft never tested their patches before releasing them
to the public Sad((

Sad I have this exact same issue and have been searching for a fix too.
If anyone knows please post. I have it on two computers. The curser
is missing when you click usernames after logging off an account. The
only way around it is hitting Ctrl Alt Delete to bring up the classic
logon screen. I have tried every fix and suggestion I could. it showed
up after doing updates but it is impossible to tell what update since
Microsoft installs so many at once. I just reformatted my laptop and it
showed up. I've only run into a few people complaining though. So I
wonder if Microsoft would bother making a fix.

Annoying!

This problem occurs randomly on two of my machines, both are xp sp2 pro
(one nl, one en) with all patches.
But both also have office 2k3 nl with all patches and recent forceware
drivers. Could people who have this problem please post if they have
these installed too? Probably has nothing to do with the video drivers,
but I suspect the advanced input features office uses are causing these
problems...

Hi devnull000,
I was reporting this problem a few days ago.
I do not know of any video drivers I have installed, but I have
Office 2003 (2k3) SP2 German installed on all 3 machines.
So any connection with Office 2003 might be possible...

No -- one of my machines has Office XP/2002, not 2003.

Daniel

I'm also having the non-responding Welcome Screen problem (but NOT always).
I'm running XP-Pro. I do NOT have Office - I'm a Word Perfect Holdout! I
think (not know) that the problem arose after I installed the Microsoft
software which came with the "Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0" and the "Wireles
Comfort Keyboard 1.0A"

Same thing here. Just started happening in the last couple of weeks - As others have reported, "Not always," but sometimes.

A "workaround" has been to click on the guest account (which requires no password), and then log-out. That gives me back the cursor for my "real" accounts.

Terribly annoying!!!

Can't tell if it was a recent patch from MS (I'm running XP/Pro and Office 2003), or one of the two new drivers I added - Added a Linksys wireless PCI card and a Maxtor OneTouch drive in the same time period.

Glad, at least, that I'm not the only one!

I have been having the same problem intermittently for maybe two weeks: No cursor and no input accepted in Welcome screen. So far it has only happened when no users are logged in, not when using the Welcome screen to unlock or switch users without logging off. I have Word XP, no other Office applications. A reboot clears up the problem. I checked for spyware with Windows Defender and Spybot S&D and found no spyware. It was probably just paranoia, but I was concerned that a keylogger or password stealer is causing the problem, but I think it's more likely that it is a bug in one of the recent updates. My machine is running XP Pro SP2 with all updates except IE 7 installed.
