After you installed XP did you install the latest drivers for
your hardware? Go to the laptop manufacturer's web site and
look for drivers for your display adapter. If you're not sure
where to look, post back with the make and model number of your
laptop.

Good luck

Likely your hardware profile has an unidentified device or one that's
known but has no driver available for it. Could also be that you've
upgraded and XP used an ACPI HAL and your laptop may not have
full compliancy. Regardless, you need to install the latest drivers for
"All" your hardware, starting with the appropriate Chipset driver pkg.
To check Device Manager:
Click Start, Run (Type) Devmgmt.Msc [Enter]
Click View, tic/check "Show Hidden Devices"
Check for the existence of a "Other" Category and any devices with
a yellow exclamation mark or Red X which indicates driver issues.
Other category is where XP places devices it detects, but cannot make
a determination of what they are or which category they belong to.

Go to this web site and enter the information from your
laptop's service tag. The service tag should be on the bottom
of your laptop.

Drivers and Downloads
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&clearsystem=...e&l=en&

If the service tag is missing, make the appropriate choices in
the "Select a Product" box.

You should end up here.

Drivers and Downloads
Inspiron 3700 / Microsoft Windows XP / English
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen...stemID=

Click on Video Adapter.
Click on ATI Mobility A1.
Click on XPM1A00.exe.
Follow the directions to install the drivers.

After you install this driver, go into Device Manager to see if
you need to install any other drivers.

Just out of curiosity, did you run System Compatibility on the
first installation screen before you installed XP? It's
possible that some of your hardware may not work in XP.

If the documentation I came across is correct your laptop is 6
years old, comes with a PIII 450 MHZ processor, a 6 GB hard
drive, 64 or 128 MB of RAM and Windows 98SE for an operating
system. Is that correct?

While these specs may satisfy the minimums that Microsoft
recommends you're probably going to find that your laptop
struggles to do anything other than visit web sites and send
email. For starters, Windows XP and a few applications will
take up nearly half of your hard drive. Next, the maximum
amount of memory that your laptop can support is 512 MB. That's
what's widely considered the minimum for acceptable
performance. Finally, your CPU is at the low end of the
minimums. Personally, unless there were some compelling reason
to run XP on this machine, I'd stick with the original
operating system.

Good luck
