Hi
Welcome to these forums.
As a first point of call go http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318729/en-us (HERE) as it would point to a "duff" setting in your BIOS or dodgy RAM.
Let us know what you found. >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |

OK, CHECKED MEMORIES AND THAT DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE THE PROBLEM. WENT INTO BIOS, RESET EVERYTHING TO DEFAULTSETTINGS. EVEN DISABLED NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD AND ENABLED THE ORIGINAL GRAPHICS THAT CAME WITH COMPUTER. GOT RID OF BLUE SCREEN, ERROR CODE7. NEXT, I TRIED TO REINSTALL COMPAQ SYSTEM RECOVERY ON ORIGINAL HD, WITH BOTH THE "R" AND THE "F" OPTIONS. WHEN LEFT TO BOOT OUT OF SAFE MODE, I GET " NDLTR IS MISSING. HIT ALT CONTROL, DELETE TO RESTART" WHEN BOOTED IN SAFE MODE, RECOVERY PROCESS IS STARTED. WHEN COPYING FILES, AT NO CERTAIN TIME, THE COUNTER STOPS, COMPUTER BASICALLY FREEZES, EVEN THOUGH FILES ARE FLYING ON IMAGE. HAVE TO USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUT DOWN AND RESTART. >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |

NTLDR = The main boot file for XP/NT.
What happens if you re-enable your Nvidia card and disable the other onboard/whatever. If you are trying to do a fresh install/re-install, format the drive or partition that you're going to install in before you start.
One other thing ... check the CD condition is OK, ie: no scratches etc. >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |

TRIED WHAT YOU SUGGESTED, AND IT STILL FROZE UP. GAVE UP ON XP. LOADED 2000 PROF. NT. IT'S WHAT I'M USING ON THIS 466. VERY SLOW THOUGH. GOT WINDOWS TO LOAD, BUT HAVE PROBLEMS HERE TOO.I HAVE SEVERAL ITEMS IN DEVICE MANAGER THAT DIDN'T GET DRIVERS LOADEDONE OF THEM IS ETHERNET CONNECTION SO NO WEB TO GET DRIVERS FROM.MULTI MEDIA AUDIO, USB, THEY ALL SAY CODE 28. MY WEB CAM SAYS FILE SPCA561.SYS IS NEEDED, TYPE THE PATH. IF I KNEW THE PATH, IT WOULDN'T BE NEEDED. I'M JUST LEARNING ABOUT THESE THINGS AND IT GET'S VERY FRUSTRATING/.
I'M HOPING IF I CAN GET NT LOADED COMPLETELY AND WORKING, MAYBE IT WOULD BE EASIER TO UPGRADE TP XP THAN REFORMAT . I HAVE NO IDEA WHETHER THATS TRUE OR NOT >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |

Aghhh, my fault, I assumed this was a reasonably recent machine.
What are the specs on this thing?? If you can barely get 2000 to run on it you certainly stand no chance with XP. And when you say 466 - you mean pre pentium??
The Code 28 is for non-installed drivers. Didn't you get these on a CD?? >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |

I APOLOGIZE FOR THE MISUNDERSTANDING. I HAVE 2 MACHINES. THE ONE I'M USING NOW IS AN E MACHINES, ETOWER 466id. IT CAME WITH WIN. 98, AND 64 MEGS OF RAM. I UPGRADED THE RAM TO 128 AND UPGRADED THE OS TO WIN 2000 PROFESSIONAL. I INSTALLED A 3D RAGEPRO GRAPHICS CARD, AND AN ETHERNET CARD FOR DSL. IT WORKS FINE, JUST SLOW AS MOLASSES.THE MACHINE I'M HAVING ALL THE TROUBLE WITH I BOUGHT NEW IN '02. IT'S A COMPAQ PRESARIO. IT HAS AN AMD 2400+ PROCESSOR. I'VE UPGRADED THE RAM FROM 128 TO 512, USING 2 KINGSTON 256's. I INSTALLED AN NVIDIA GeFORCE 5500 GRAPHICS CARD. IT CAME WITH A 40 GIG HD WHICH I HAD USED ALMOST 2/3. I AQUIRED A COUPLE OF USED HARDDRIVES. 1) A MAXTOR 80 GIG, 2) A WESTERN DIGITAL 60 GIG. I SWAPPED IN THE 80 GIG WITH NO PROBLEMS, BUT SOMEONE HAD PARTITIONED OFF 4 GIGS AND INSTALLED XP IN THAT AREA. I WAS CONSTANTLY HAVING TO MOVE STUFF AROUND AND IT BECAME FOULED UP. I TRIED TO DELETE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND EITHER MOVE THE PARTITION OR REMOVE IT. >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |

I SCREWED THAT UP. I REINSTALLED THE ORIG HDBUT IT WOULDN'T WORK EITHER. NEXT I TRIED THE 60GIG HD. AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, IT DIDN'T HAVE AN OS ON IT. I TRIED TO INSTALL XP, THAT'S WHEN I STARTED GETTING THE ERROR CODES MENTIONED ABOVE. SINCE YOUY FIRST STARTED HELPING ME, I HAVE INSTALLED WIN 200O PRO ON THE 60 GIG HD. TRYING THIS, TRYING THAT HAS GOT IT UP AND RUNNING WITH JUST A COUPLE PROBLEMS LEFT. IN DEVICE MANAGER, EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD EXCEPT OTHER DEVICES. THERE ARE 6 ITEMS WITH ? NEXT TO THEM. LISTED ARE 1) ETHERNET CONTROLLER. IT'S INTEGRATED. 2)MULTIMEDIA AUDIO CONTROLLER. 3)PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER. 4)USB CONTROLLER. 5&6) VIDEO CONTROLLER. ONE IS THE GEFORSE CARD, THE OTHER INTEGRATED. ALL HAVE DRIVER ISSUES. MY SOFTWARE CONSISTS OF XP ON 2 SETS OF COMPAQ RECOVERY DISKS. ONE SET FROM THE COMPUTER, THE OTHER FROM COMPAQ. I HAVE 2ND HAND, BURNED COPIES OF WIN 2000 AND XP. I HAVE PRODUCT CODES FOR 2000, NOT THE BOOTLEG COPY OF XP. I CAN GET DRIVERS FOR VIDEOCONTROLLERS BUT DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST. THEY ARE ON START UP DISKS. I CAN'T ACCESS INTERNET BECAUSE OF ETHERNET CONTROLLER. SUGGESTIONS? I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUY TAKING TIME AND HELPING ME. Firstly, just so you have a basic understanding the minimum RAM for 2000 is 256Mb and for XP 512Mb. That is to allow both systems to run smoothly. 128Mb for 2000 is a bit like trying to run XP on 256Mb - bloody slow.
We have to get rid of the problems you have now so take these step by step:
1st, get a clean HDD and re-format it before the install.
2nd, then install the OS. (either XP or 2000)
3rd, when that is done, FIND THE SYSTEM DRIVERS FOR YOUR M/BOARD!! This is why you have the problems in Device Manager. You should have a separate CDROM or floppies that came with the machine. It is vital that these board drivers are installed otherwise we may as well surrender now.
If you really have no disk or information that came with the machine, if you give a call to Compaq (or HP I think now) they should be able to tell you what the machine came with. Have the Model & Ser.No handy when you speak with them.
You should then be able to download the necessary drivers from the other machine, or they may send you a drivers disk.
Hopefully you should be running by this time. >> Stay informed about: blue screen, error code |
