Hi;

Up until 2 weeks ago whenever I ran my weekly chkdsk, it took about 45
minutes to run.. Now when I run it , it takes 2½ hours. What would cause
this and how can I fix this?

Chkdsk reports that there are no bad sectors or any major errors on either
partition. The major portion of the delay seems to occur in stages 4 & 5 is
test.

My computer:
make : generic
cpu: GHz
RAM: 1½ gbts
hard drive; partition C: 74.2 GB free space 46.1 GB
partition F: 158 GB free space 155 GB
slightly less than 1 year old

operating system" Windows XP Pro SP2

Have a good day,

Mel Marcovitz

Hi Mel:

Disk Error Checking (CHKDSK)is fine for as far as it goes, but for the
most accurate results you should use the disk manufacturer's own
diagnostics, which you can download for free from the manufacturer's web
site. If the manufacturer's diagnostics say you're good, you're good,
and if not the software will help you file a warranty claim.

By the way, weekly disk checking is really unnecessary given the
reliability of today's hardware and the NTFS file system. You're not
doing any harm by checking weekly, but you could find better things to
do with the time. Unless I suspect I have a disk problem, which hasn't
happened yet, I run the manufacturer's diagnostics once or twice a year
just for the heck of it. Warning: A thorough disk check takes hours.

Mel: Just a thought but it sounds like maybe... you checked the the box
"scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

That would make it take a very long time! Make sure that is not checked
unless you have reason to.
Hopefully you do a disk cleanup first. And Defrag once in a while. I do
that every couple of months.
Note: I'm no expert!

Just a thought, Regards,
Dallas...
