Mel: Just a thought but it sounds like maybe... you checked the the box
"scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
That would make it take a very long time! Make sure that is not checked
unless you have reason to.
Hopefully you do a disk cleanup first. And Defrag once in a while. I do
that every couple of months.
Note: I'm no expert!
