Help w/ creating cd/dvd for backup files

ok so i've backed up my files and folders and its pretty big since its the
first time i backed up my computer. i have the backup file on my desktop so
how do i burn it to dvd or cd. I plan on doing a full system restore so i
have to do this first b4 i can restore my system to the original state. ive
seen some posts that talk about creating a image file with an imaging
program. i have alcohol 120% if that is a solution would that program work?
its not one of the ones that they rae mentioning. i have a sony vaio w/ xp
pro (media canter edition) cd and dvd burning capabilities. thx

I am trying to create a back up dvd I put in brand new dvds but the system
says they are not blank i have a gateway 507gr
