When I try to run Disk defragmenter from a command line, I get " another
command line or GUI defragmenter is already running. Only one instance of
Windows Defragmenter can run at a time." When I try from the defrag
shortcut I get " Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to
run on the volume: (CSmile Please run Chkdsk /f.

When I tried disk cleanup, it wouldn't work, CPU use went to 92-95% for
cleanmgr. I waited ten minutes with no progress.

David

Have you tried restarting your computer? Does chkdsk then run? If it
does allow chkdsk to complete. It may take some time or a long time to
complete! It will depend on the size of the hard drive and whether or
not it encounters and has to repair/ mark off bad sectors on the hard
disk.

Often chkdsk is set to run on boot up if the computer has been shut down
incorrectly. Have you used the power off or rest buttons?

Hope this helps.
