Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

I recently recieved a program (Pinnacle Studio 9) from a friend and I put the
..exe file onto my computer (I haven't tried to install or even run it). I now
know that my friend got the program off of Kazaa Lite K++ (a file sharing
program know to cause problems with computers) and he had some problems with
it too. After attempting to delete the file and getting an error saying:

Cannot delete Pinnacle9: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

I've gotten this error before and have been able to solve the problem
myself. First I tried restarting the computer and then deleting it and that
didn't work. I then tried closing all processes running (except for critical
processes) and it was still being used. After restarting, I ran Lavasot
Ad-aware and it didn't pick anything up. I tried to do a system restore to
two day ago, before the program was put onto my computer, and it still
remained afterwards. Everything I try doesn't help in the least bit. It
doesn't seem to be malignant in any way, but I'm sure it's not supposed to be
there and I'd really love to see it gone. I cannot rename, delete or move it
in any way.

P.S. - I was wondering if there is any way to create a start-up disk for
Windows XP SP2. I know that if I started up the computer with a start-up disk
I would have a better chance of deleting the file through the command console.

Glad you have got rid of the file - saves having to boot into Safe Mode.
