Post subject: How Can this be possible...for those who like a good mystery

I recently had one of my XP pro machines die. Needed a complete reinstall. Fine. So I went and got it today and back at the office set it all up. Turning it on, I can see the BIOS screen at start up, but get no further, just a black screen. So I took it back to the shop. They plug in and it works fine. Long story short, going back a second time with my monitor, and it works at the shop. My Machine My Monitor, works no problem at thier shop. Get back to office, and it does not.

What I have done so far:

1) Tried offending monitor on a dif machine at my office. WORKS.
2) Tried dif monitor on offending machine at my office. DOES NOT WORK
3) Tried another dif monitor on offending machine, DOES NOT WORK
4) Tried different power cords NO CHANGE
5) Tried to see machine on network, but it is not visible. New istall of OS may default to prevent it from being networkable, not sure. Not a windows expert by any means.
6) Screamed shocking profanities at machine. DOES NOT WORK. but felt somewhat better.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this kind of behaviour. It would appear to be something in my office environment that is to blame, but I am buggered as to what.

Appreciate any help.

Craig

-UPDATE-

Have brought offending machine and monitor home, still does not work, so there goes the "something in my office enviroment" theory.

Hi Craig

And welcome to these forums.

You started off by saying that you only see the bios screen an nothing else. Is this true or are you getting into Windows now??

What happens at work/home when the machine is NOT connected to a network? Sounds like the shop re-installed Windows but not the network, but your post was confusing.

Please let us know

Hi

I only get the BIOS screen, I can go into the setup by pressing DEL at the appropriate time. If I let it go through the normal startup sequence it never reaches the Windows XP splash screen with the progress bar, it just stays black and does nothing.

I only tried to see it on the network (two times) to determine if the machine actually had booted up and the monitor was just not displaying anything, or if perhaps windows had not booted up at all. BUT, I am not sure if - because the OS was reinstalled - networking optinons may by default be turned off therefore making it unavailable to the network.

It is just weird. The exact same equpiment works in the shop but not my Office or house. I can't very well tell the tech guy (who has been extremely willing to help -if unable!) that they installed the system incorrectly when I am standing in front of him watching him use it!

I hope that this is clear.

I am off to bed (its late in my part of the world) so will post back to any replies tomorrow.

Thanks for your reply.

Craig

Although an awful coincidence, I can't help feeling that there maybe something a "tad" loose on the hardware side. If you can, check inside the covers for anything loose, re-seat them. Also, remove the memory, brush the socket out thoroughly with a dry/clean paint brush, and clean the gold pins on the card(s) with alcohol (or any mild cleaner) and thoroughly wipe off to make dry. Replace the cards.

Next, switch the machine on and go into the BIOS. Firstly, are all the disk drives and CDROMS shown as there (installed). Does the memory show up correctly?? Is the Date/Time OK?

If OK, save the Bios and the machine should reset. If the machine leaves the Bios page, then keep pressing F8 numerous times to get the option menu. If you have got this far?? select Safe Mode. Let us know what happens.

Also, could you tell me what sort of machine it is, the OS, and finally, wireless, or wired keyboard.

Hi

I Have actually tried wiggling all the connections, havn't gone so far as removing any of the cards yet. In the start up sequence, I get to the screen where it says Press F3 to enter Raid Setup (or similiar) and then another screen shows briefly and says ("boot from CD" three times at the bottom) I have tried pressing F8 repeatiedly but nothing happens. Of course if I take it to the repair shop.....

The machine is a local reseller brand, has a Pentium 4 3.0 ghz processer, 1gb ram and I am running XP pro on it. I have a wired keyboard and mouse.

When entering the bios setup I can see that everything is present and accounted for the only hard drive is listed as the primary boot volume.

Thanks again for your suggestions

Craig

Hi

Do you have raid (or scsi?). You presumably have the CDROM as the first boot drive.

Temporarily set the C: drive (or boot drive) as the first boot drive. (this way you should not see the CD part popping up in the boot.)

After the raid/scsi part - hold F8 down. you should get the boot menu. Can you get this far?? I'll be on most of the day. g/l

Have you tried a different mouse and keyboard ?
I have come across PCs in the past that fail to boot up because one or the other has been causing the problem

Hmmmm....that makes sense. I bet when he takes the tower in to the shop the tech uses his own mouse/keyboard so it boots.
