Post subject: help with weird performance problem, please
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>perform_maintain (more info?)

When I tried to type my subjct just now, the currsor was blinking (and still
is) from cursor arror to boxed "enter your message". I can click and click on
the "X" to close a window and nothing happens, sometimes have to click many
times. Everything loads very, very slowly. I don't think this happens when I
am off the "net." Are there too many resources being used up?? I'm a novice
so please explain everything. I copied the info below after seeing this info
requested in another post. What can I close of the stuff that's running
below? I am on AOL (have to be) and on dialup (not even satellite available
here right now). Thank you for any help.

Wow, that's a whole mess of processes!

I'm not sure what that last line means. When you are in Task Manager
(accessed by Ctrl + Alt + Del), select the Performance tab. You should
see three figures under Commit Charge (K): Total, Limit, and Peak. What
are they?

It looks like AOL is using up lots of resources. Are you *sure* you
can't do without it? I'd like to think there are other dial-up
alternatives where you live! McAfee is another well-know resource hog.
There are better alternative anti-virus apps, many free (including Avast
and AVG). You may do your own research with regard to your other startup
apps/processes:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?

Also have a look at:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/ and click on the Task List button.

Daave, I have to use AOL because of cost, next least expensive in this area
is phone company service, which is twice the $9.99 a month I pay for AOL. I
didn't know AVG was still free. I thought it went to all paid service. I used
to use it and loved it. Will check that out and if it's still free, dump the
McAfee.
Now, for those numbers under Commit Charge (K): Total: 385336; Limit:
1587212, and Peak: 419136. Now, I'll go read the articles you suggested and
see if it is something I can learn. Any more suggestions? Thanks!

Hi, paperladee,
There are lots of dial-up Internet Service Providers out there. One word of
caution, though: Be careful about choosing one. I was stung by an unethical
and criminal operator, who probably is doing time now. There are at least
three cheaper providers that I know of that have been around for several
years, and I or a family member have used them. They are Juno, PeoplePC and
NetZero. Go here to check what is available in your location, assuming you
are in the USA: http://www.findanisp.com/
Good luck,
angie

I'd still look into alternatives to AOL if I were you. Local is usually
better, but if you're looking to spend less than $10 a month, I'm sure
there are still national alternatives in your area (perhaps NetZero or
PeoplePC?). I also would avoid any "accelerator" add-ons; it's usually
better just to tweak your own settings.

Where do you live? Perhaps this site can help:

http://www.findanisp.com/

AVG has always been free. See:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0

Very often, McAfee leaves its nasty tentacles in systems. If the
add/remove method is less than effective, have a look at:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner

I forgot to ask one little thing: how much RAM do you have! If you have
256 MB, that would surely explain your sluggishness. Your "total" figure
(amount of memory: RAM plus pagefile) is equivalent to 376 MB and your
"peak" figure (highest memory used in your session) is equivalent to 409
MB. Both of these figures are considerably greater than 256 MB, so if
that's all the RAM you have, that means your PC is constantly relying on
your pagefile (which is located on the hard drive and which is therefore
slower than your physical memory). If you have at least 512 MB of RAM,
that may actually be enough. The best way to determine how much you
over-rely on your pagefile is by using PageFileMon:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

But I would first trim down your unneeded applications/processes. You
may find that that is all you need to do.

If you do have enough RAM, then something else is slowing you down. It's
important to perform regular routine maintenance on your PC. It's also
possible you unknowingly have malware running on your PC. The following
site can be very useful in speeding up a PC:

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Pay special attention to Steps 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10.

Also, AutoRuns is superior to msconfig:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx

One last thing: If you always keep your PC on, at least one off your
apps may be "leaking memory." So it is always advisable to reboot your
PC at least once a day.

I'm aware this is a lot to digest, so take your time!
