My Dell, purchased late 2005 XP Home SP2 does not show hibernate when you
select turn off. You have to use the shift key and the standby changes to
hibernate. Just purchased a new Dell laptop for my son and his turn off
shows all four boxes. I've searched for the hotfix but cannot find it.
Also, found a doc listing hotfixes in SP2 but have a question on that. Does
a newer laptop XP Home SP2 have more or newer hotfixes than XP Home SP2 from
a year ago? >> Stay informed about: no hibernate on turn off - xp home - there on a newer Dell |

Hot fix is here...
When you click "Turn Off Computer" on the Start menu, the Hibernate button
does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893056
No "Hibernate" Button Is Present After You Click "Turn off Computer"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291790
--
Hope this helps. Let us know.

Thanks - I had found that article but it implies you have to ask support for
the hotfix. I checked and my version of msgina.dll is 8/4/2004 wheras the
article indicates that the newer is at least 1/27/2005. Interesting in that
my son's lap appears to have this fix. I always check for and apply updates
so is it correct to assume that newer builds have newer files and hotfixes
that are not out there as updates.

Same issue on my HP...how do I get the hotfix? When I access MS support for
e-mail support, it wants to charge me $59, since it's an OEM version of XP
home. And the HP tech on chat was a moron...asked me to enable
hibernation...already done....then tells me to use the shift combination to
see the hibernate button. I had already referenced the KB, so he knew what I
wanted to do.

It was my understanding that they do not charge you for hotfixes. However,
if that is not the case then list your e-mail and I will send it to you.
It's a small file.

There is no charge for hot fixes if all you mention is the KB article number
for that particular hot fix. I would recommend against accepting emailed
files from someone you don't know, no matter how good intentioned they might
be.

Call Microsoft Professional Customer Service @ 1-800-936-5700(4900) (this
line is 24/7), there is an option for hotfix. A rep will email you a link to
the fix.
