Post subject: Need to install Missing Backup Utility
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>perform_maintain (more info?)

While reading some of the MS tech pages on the Windows Registry, I hit upon a
page that discussed using the supplied Backup utility for saving "system
state" data. I've had my WinXP/Home system installed for some time now, but
have never bothered to use this utility before. To activate the Backup
utility, the above mentioned page directs the reader as follows: Start »
Programs » Accessories » System Tools. Having gone there and finding *no*
sign of said utility, I tried looking in my system folders (System32, etc.),
but no sign of what might have been the required .exe or .msc file.

So… it would seem that I don't have the utility installed. This seems
puzzling and mildly disturbing. It's be more than "mildly", except it seems
conceivable that I may have intentionally (albeit, stupidly) excluded¹ this
utility when I did my initial WinXP install. In any event, I'd like to
figure out how to find and install it now. I *do* have the OEM WinXP install
CD that came with my DELL laptop.

Any advice and/or guidance will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

don't have a tape backup system, I may have opted to exclude the utility. In
retrospect, not too swift of me.

Hi

If you are running XP Home the backup utility isn't installed by default.
Have a look in the following folder on the XP CD:

valueadd\msft\ntbackup

Will do. And thanks for mentioning that the default is to *not* install it.
At least I don't feel quite as stupid now. Wink

Followup question: my OEM CD is going on three years old (it included
Srvc.Pack 1a)... can I assume that its version of the Backup utility is still
the latest one? Or might I be well advised to find one more current? I also
have the Srvc.Pack 2 CD. Might I find a more current version of the Backup
utility on that?

Thanks again for the help. Much appreciated.

Will-

I found two files in the CD folder you told me about: <NTBACKUP.MSI> and
<README.TXT> which had the following information:
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. ASR is not supported on home edition.

IF you install NtBackup from the CD to the Home Edition, ASR functionality
will appear to work fine during the backup session. Since the setup does not
support ASR in the home edition, there is no way to initiate the ASR restore
in case of a disaster. If you need to restore from this session, install
Windows XP manually
and then restore from the ASR media.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Will, could you or anyone else help me make sense of what this means?

Also, if it makes sense to go ahead and install that .MSI file, it there any
special way to do it? Do I have to install it off of the CD?... and/or
using the AutoRun menu?

Thanks.
