I am wondering if it is possible to install xp on a small old computer I
have got.

It is a Dan Pentium 2, with 6Gigabyte hard drive and it has 250 Ram of
memory and a 333mhz processor.

Is it possible to run xp on this system?

Thanks

Yes it is possible for that computer to run XP without a problem I would
suggest getting a little bigger HDD though.
System Requirements
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx

MS recommends a 1.5 gig HD space available but I don't think that will be
enough after SP2 is installed.
6 gig would be plenty for operating but not much storage after installing
some programs.

It's generally not recommend to run xp on machines older than 3 years.
It will probably run, but be very slow

I need it only for an emergency standby system, so I wont be using it much
and won't need so many programs installed. So from what you say it seems the
only factor is space? Is that right?

Thanks

No space is not that big of a factor if you are not going to install but a
few programs.

Your HDD will be plenty to do what you are wanting to do.

HI River

Thanks for your advice, yes I am in the process of recovering from a virus
infection which knocked the soxs off me, I had no idea it was there adn no
scanner picked it up, I lost data and am now behidn with my work/business
work and so I am determined not to let this happen again. So hence the
backup system Smile

Kind of a wake up call. I am now 100% paranoid about viruses LOL>

Thanks, well I'll try it and see what happens, I've heard various stories
and will just suck it and see! Thanks forthe tip, I'll be using it for
word processing and email, thats bout all. It'll need office 2000 installed
as a bare minimum I would think.

Instead of a backup system, consider a system of backups. Ghost or
Drive Image to make compressed mirrors of your harddrive on a
regular basis. Keep three sets in rotation, and make them once a
week, saving your data files to another drive or to CD or DVD
daily. Then you can laugh at viruses.

Now that sounds a pretty good idea! The only problem is that I'm not yet
having done that. I'm understanding the concept
of partitions on the disc drive but just need to work out how to do the
mirroring as I have not yet done that.

I will have to disagree with this. The age of the puter does not have
anything to do with running the OS.
It all has to do with the size of the components not the age of them.

My wife is running XP Pro on a 5 year old puter and it runs better with XP
then it did with 98SE, & ME.

I was going to recommend both! Create a multiboot environment with
Win98 and WinXP. But the drive is probably to small. Considering this
is a back system go a head and install XP, if it doesn't work out
format and install Win98 which we know will work just fine.

In case you get your hands on a larger drive.

If you install XP I would not suggest installing full office. Maybe
just MS-Word and use Outlook Express for mail. Remember that you
should leave a GB of disk space empty for swap file/ page files.

I'm running XP Pro on a AMD 800 Mhz with 256 MB RAM PC100s and not problem
at all. I have all the eye candy and it runs like a dream. It was originally
an HP but I erased the drive and put XP Pro on it. It was purchased in
September, 2000, a tad more than three years ago.
