Post subject: Can't make wireless work

I bought a wireless router, and a wireless card for a desktop computer. Hooked up the router to another computer with an ethernet card. Router hooked up to the ethernet card and the DSL router. No startup to the internet. Checked with Dlink, and found they do not allow a static IP address, as required by my DSL provider. DSL provider would not help. They gave me a phone number for DSL router provider. They require $30 just to answer the phone with no guarentee that they can or will help. I understand they have a special card for $150 to install in a slot on the DSL router for wireless. No guarentee that will work. (Give me $180 and I will get back to you, maybe). Yeah right. Never did get the wireless card installed. Still interested in getting two computers, in opposite ends of the house hooked together and to the internet. Any help will be appreciated.

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Get a decent brand like Netgear and sell the D-Link stuff on Ebay (tell them
static address not supported)
Definitely don't waste money on phone calls when a Netgear is so cheap!!

Installation instructions for Netgear - plug in, set the logon info, start
work!

The Dlink can't use the static address that my DSL provider uses, because the DSl modem uses the same address as the Dlink router, which is not a modem.

I'm not sure why you wrote this reply when the request was for the model
numbers.
I have a similar setup with two Linksys routers. It's necessary to set the
second router to a fixed IP for this to work. Had you supplied the requested
info, we might be on the way to a solution. If the Dlink router really won't
accept a fixed IP, which I'm not ready to believe yet, you'll ned to get a
different brand.

The Dlink did not get me on the net through my DSL gateway. I called Dlink support and they told me that the two units can not use the same static IP address.

OK! Heres where we stand.
I connected computer #1 with an ethernet cord to a LAN port on the Dlink.
Connected Dlink with an ethernet cord from a LAN port to a port on Actiontec.
Now have internet through Dlink.
Do not have a wireless card for computer #2, that will load the drivers and software. Still working on that. When I get it installed, will let you know what happens.
